Congrats on making your first post here in the Community. I can provide some additional information about having a tax-exempt customer. To select a reason for the tax-exempt, all you need to do is click on the drop-down arrow under Reason for exemption. You can also put exemption details if needed. If you're unsure of which reason to pick, I recommend consulting with your accountant to be sure or checking out this link about Conducting non-taxable sales. If you don't have an accountant, go to this guide to find one near you.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. I want to make sure all of your concerns are addressed. Take care!

Candice on the QuickBooks Team said, "To select a reason for the tax-exempt, all you need to do is click on the drop-down arrow under Reason for exemption." But jonvannest said, "dont understand says select reason: but nothing comes up." And that's exactly correct: the person posting the question said there is no list of reasons to select. I agree: I am offered only a field in which to enter "Exemption details." Even the video on How to add customers in QuickBooks (at https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/customer-lists/edit-customer-information/00/185549) says the same thing: all you can do is enter exemption details, whatever those are. So how do you make a customer tax exempt?

Hey there,

Thanks for joining this conversation. You're already on the right track in exempting your customer using the manual sales tax in QB Online.

I can see that @jonvannest is using the new automated sales tax feature. This is why he is seeing a different option on the customer's profile. See screenshot below for your reference:

Just in case, here's an overview about the benefits of using the automated sales tax feature: Set up and use automated sales tax in QuickBooks Online

Is there a way to add a different reason for exemption?  I want to put "Out of State" so it stops showing a separate line called "NO SALES TAX" on the sales tax liability report.  If I choose "Other", it won't let me put anything in the exemption details - TOTALLY INFLEXIBLE!

Thanks for sharing your concern in this thread, @bmeteyer. I'd like to share some insights about having a tax-exempt customer in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

I replicated this on my end. I selected Other and I entered anything in the exemption details section without issue.

If the issue persists, I suggest logging into your account using a private browser/ incognito mode. Private browsing prevents cookies from being stored on your computer, making it a great place to identify browser issues. Use these keyboard shortcuts:

  • Safari: Command + Shift + N
  • Google Chrome: CTRL + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Edge: CTRL + Shift + P

Once signed in, check if you can input it in the exemption details section. If it works, let's clear the cache of your browser. This removes its stored files to ensure the program performs efficiently.

If private browsing doesn't work, I'd recommend using other supported browsers. They'll provide the best and most secure experience with QuickBooks.

Though you can enter the exemption details, this won't change anything in your Sales Tax Liability report. It will still show as No Tax Sales. While this option is currently unavailable, you can share your thoughts and ideas through your account. Our product development team reviews all the feedback we receive to ensure we’re meeting the needs of our customers.

Here's how:

  1. Click the Gear icon at the top, then select Feedback.
  2. Enter your comments or product suggestions.

Thank you for your reply Kevin.  I was able to do what I wanted by unchecking the tax exempt button, then I can choose "out of state", which is one of the items we set up.  Now my only problem is getting these fields changed for 800+ customers.  Exporting the customer list doesn't give these fields.

Thanks for getting back to us, @bmeteyer.

It's great to hear you're able to make your customer tax-exempt. Currently, the option to edit or import a customer's tax profile is unavailable. You'll have to edit each file to do it.

I can see how your experience will help our program user-friendly. Rest assured, your idea and experience will be reported to our Developers. I recommend sending a product suggestion through this link: Customer Feedback for QuickBooks Online.

In that page, you'll also see the recently updated ideas added to the program.

In case you need help with other customer-related tasks, feel free to browse our help page. It contains topics with articles to guide you along.
