My w-2 (2018) is showing the amount elected for my 401k included in box 1 as taxable. It is also in box 12a. Is this an error?

Hello there, @hdessler!

I’m happy to share a few things how the amounts are reflected on your W2 forms.

There isn’t an error on your form. The amounts reported on your tax returns depend on the taxability of the payroll items.

For the 401k plan, it’s not taxable to federal withholding (Box 2), however, it will reduce your taxable wages in Box 1. At the same time, the retirement amount is reported in Box 12 with code D.

For more details how different pay types affects taxes and forms, you can check out this article: Supported pay types and deductions in Online Payroll.
