No withholdings in payroll with Direct Deposit

I failed to update payroll before creating monthly direct deposit paychecks that have been distributed. Now that I’ve installed the update, I believe next month’s payroll will include the proper withholding for both months. However, I submit the federal 941 tax payment monthly. How would I correct this in order to pay this liability? Thank you.

Hi, Steph. I'd be glad to assist you in correcting your payroll tax liability.

You can consider adjusting your payroll liabilities in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) to correct your current 941 tax payment. You can follow these steps:

  1. Go to Employees, then Payroll Taxes and Liabilities
  2. Select Adjust Payroll Liabilities, and select the last paycheck date of the affected month or quarter in the Date and Effective Date fields.
  3. In the Adjustment is for: section, select Employee Adjustment to correct your employee’s YTD info. Then select the employee's name. Do this even if the item being adjusted is a company-paid item.
  4. Under the Item Name column, select the payroll item you want to adjust.
  5. Enter a positive amount to increase your liability.
  6. Enter the amount under the Income Subject to Tax column if you need to make a wage base adjustment.
  7. Under Memo, enter a note about the adjustment for reference.
  8. Click the Accounts Affected, then, select Do not affect accounts or Affect liability and expense accounts
  9. Hit OK and select Next Adjustment if you have additional employees to enter an adjustment for. Otherwise, select OK to save the changes.

For more detailed guidance, refer to this article: Adjust payroll liabilities in QuickBooks Desktop Payroll

Moving forward, QBDT will automatically adjust the paycheck and upcoming tax liabilities.

After this, you can run a payroll liability balances report to check if the amounts to be paid are correct. You can refer to this article: Run payroll reports
