Payroll for a non-cash gift

I have an employee that was given a non-cash gift.  I've tried following the instructions found here:  https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/help-article/taxation/create-zero-net-paycheck/L2c...

but when I try to edit the check, I don't have the option to edit the deduction amount. I've also tried to change the deduction amount to the gift amount, but it's still now showing.  I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong

Payroll for a non-cash gift

Let's navigate through QuickBooks Online Payroll together so you can create a zero net paycheck to record a gift to an employee, idealtrucks.

I appreciate you reviewing the steps in our help article to document gifts to an employee so they can be taxed appropriately and your records stay accurate. Let me provide some visual aids to help you find the option to edit the paycheck and the deduction amount.

Before following the steps below, ensure you've set up an after-tax deduction and an Other Earnings pay type for your employee.

  1. On the left navigation panel, go to Payroll and then Employees.
  2. Click Run Payroll.1.png
  3. Tick the employee who received the gift.
  4. In the Other Earnings box, enter the value the employee received.
  5. Under the Actions column, click the vertical ellipsis menu (⋮) icon.
  6. Select Edit Paycheck.2.png
  7. In the Employee deductions section, enter the amount as the current net pay in the other after-tax box.3.png
  8. Click Save.
  9. Preview the payroll and then press Submit payroll.

Suppose you still don't see the option to edit the check and the deduction amount. In that case, I recommend accessing your QuickBooks Online account in an incognito window to help troubleshoot the issue, as it could be related to your browser's cache. Opening your account in a private window can give QuickBooks a fresh start.

Once you're in the incognito window, repeat the necessary steps. If you can see the options and complete the steps successfully, return to your regular browser to clear its cache to remove any outdated files that might be causing issues with page loading.

Payroll for a non-cash gift

I had been trying to do a bonus only payroll.  The deduction was not editable on that.  If I do a regular pay run, it is editable, but I don't want the regular salary paid, and I also need to back-date the pay to 2024.   How do I do this?  This is just for a gift the employee received in 2024

Payroll for a non-cash gift

Hi,@idealtrucks. I appreciate adding clarifications in your concerns. I'm glad to share some insights regarding processing a bonus-only transaction in QuickBooks Online Payroll. I understand you're encountering a challenge with editing the deductions on an employee's paycheck. Please note that the deductions section is typically not adjustable, especially during an unscheduled payroll for bonuses.

The article's steps are meant for regular paychecks, not for unscheduled payroll. To use these steps, you must record the gift as regular payroll to avoid adding taxes to the paychecks.

For additional helpful information, I'll include an article that you can review to pay bonuses to employees.
