Buy nowI have multiple employees on salary and they are each in a different department. I want my P & L to reflect the payroll by department. QBO is unable to map SALARY employees to a different account. If I make a new pay type, my only option is to add it as hourly. When I phoned, no one was able to help me figure out how to map each salary employee to a different account. I can map the employer taxes by employee, why can't I map the wages by employee??? This takes many more steps and time to run one employee at a time and change the mapping each time. It is also time consuming to run all payroll to one category then JE all the changes.
Hello there, momentumriver.
I understand the importance of allocating salary employees to a different account. However, the option to do so is unavailable. We understand your need and would love to hear your thoughts about your experience by sending feedback on your QuickBooks Online company.
Here's how:
In the meantime, you can use the class tracking feature. It'll allow you to categorize transactions for better reporting and analysis. It can allocate payroll expenses to specific classes when mapping an employee to a different account, providing a more detailed expense breakdown by category.
Furthermore, you may want to look at a third-party application to help map salary employees to a different account. You can find one by visiting this website: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/app/apps/home/.
Please visit our Firm of the Future page periodically to stay updated with the news and updates.
Additionally, I've added articles below for more information on class tracking and managing payroll preferences:

I want to ensure you're all set, and I'm here if you need further guidance mapping employees in Quickbooks. Take care.
The class tracking does not solve my issue. I need the salary categories to be broken down.
Just switched NOT by choice to online and we are having the same issue and it is a huge problem What was a simple task in the desktop version has become a nightmare. We should not have to create journal entries after every payroll to assign wages to different categories. Just processed first payroll yesterday and waiting to see where things go. If Quickbooks is going to force customers to go online ALL features and functionality should be available. We also have customized reports that did not transfer over at all. This migration has created much more work for me at a much higher price. Time to start looking for alternative programs. Desktop should never have been discontinued.
And support is an absolute joke. They have no idea how the software should work or limitations. The feature that is supposed to "re-map" transactions by employee (and not hit the cash account) does the exact opposite. It will remap the cash side (causing you to have to re-reconcile EVERY payroll wage transaction for the date range selected.)
Software is like a beta version and should never have been released to the production environment with these bugs in it!
