Can I tag a split transaction with two tags and have each tag associated with a specific portion (dollar amount) of the split?

I agree with all the others who point out that this is a serious deficiency.  I don't understand why it was implemented this way.

I am also trying to tag a vendor receipt with multiple categories and am unable to tag each category for the specific amount.  Tags are useless for one tag group without the ability to split into additional tag groups.  I have submitted feedback, but no response.

I totally agree with the Tag issue.  I purchase multiple items in one transaction with multiple categories and I want to be able to tag the various categories.  Please fix!!

Two years later and we keep getting yada yada yada.  Why are you fighting this relatively simple feature request that matters so much to many users?

It is now April 2022 and I am STILL WAITING ON THIS BASIC FEATURE. Intuit, this is a no-brainer. We cannot properly use your software without this functionality. Tags are completely useless unless you can tag the individual splits on a transaction. 2+ years. This is ridiculous.

More than 2 years now - We need to be able to tag individual splits in an expense

I agree with all comments - tags are useless until we can properly use them in a split transaction.

Providing the best experience with the product is what we aim for, janemanning, dbland07666, and pbb2.

There's no specific time frame when the Tag feature that allows customers to apply different tags to split items will be added in QuickBooks Online (QBO). I'd recommend sending this request straight to our product engineers through feedback. Sharing features and options that you would like implemented is how our engineers look for new product updates. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon at the top.
  2. Select Feedback.
  3. Enter your comments or product suggestions.
  4. Then select Next to submit feedback.

In the meantime, we can tag them after you split the transaction. Let me show you how:

  1. Go to the Accounting tab and select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Locate the account, click View register, and find the transactions.
  3. Select it, click Edit and you'll see the Tags option.

Then we can access your Transaction List by Tag Group to review the transactions. You can customize it to show specific details. Let me guide you on how:

  1. Go to the Reports tab on the left pane.
  2. Type Transaction List by Customer tag Group in the search box.
  3. Click the Customize button.
  4. Choose a Report period in the drop-down.
  5. In the Row/Columns, pick Transaction Type.
  6. Under Columns drop-down, choose the group name.
  7. Tap Run Report.

You can also hit Save Customization to save the report. It will save on the Custom report page. Memorizing reports in QuickBooks, it’ll help you save time since it automatically updates every time there are newly added transactions. You also have an option to turn on the Automatic send email reports feature in QBO. For more information, visit this article: Set schedule and email information for a memorized report.

To learn more about the Tag feature, check out these articles:

Additionally, please visit our help articles page. This page contains a lot of information about managing customers' payments, transactions, reports, and other related topics.

I'll be right here to continue helping if you have any other concerns or questions about QuickBooks. Assistance is just a post away. You have a good one.

Can I tag a split transaction with two tags and have each tag associated with a specific portion (dollar amount) of the split?

Hello everyone,

Checking if there has been an update so we can use multiple tags on a single expense. For example for reporting on federal grants payroll is often split between several grants and needs to be reported this way. Without this feature Quickbooks is not suitable for tracking grants. Are there any updates on this functionality?

Can I tag a split transaction with two tags and have each tag associated with a specific portion (dollar amount) of the split?

Hello there, @adam_stager.

I recognize that this feature is essential in tagging specific reports in QuickBooks Online to obtain the best insights. I'm here to share some about the update.

A transaction can have as many tags as you want. However, you can only select one tag per group. Since tags are used to keep track of things at the transaction level.

Adding a tag to each line item in the expense tab, is still unavailable. To enhance your experience, I recommend sending feedback to our product developers for this function in QuickBooks Online.

Here's how:

1. Select the Gear icon.

2. Select the type of feedback in the box.

3. Click the Next button to submit.

Your suggestion will be send directly to our developers. They are the ones who will take it into account when future QuickBooks features are implemented.

For now, to group income and expenses for job costing, budgeting, or fund accounting. Class tracking can be use to track specific line items. To learn more about the function in QBO, see this article: Class tracking in QuickBooks Online

Then, to track transactions, you can run several class reports. Here's an awesome link to open for the detailed steps: Run reports by class.

Please know that I am here if you need further assistance with anything in the program. Just mention me anytime to notify me. Have a nice day!

Can I tag a split transaction with two tags and have each tag associated with a specific portion (dollar amount) of the split?

Just joining in on the frustration :)

I'm migrating from Self-Employed to Essentials and was surprised this wasn't an available feature. Folks, this is super frustrating but I know the QB team can make this happen as it's currently available on Self-Employed.

The questions is just when...

@qbo team: how about offering us a discount for our pain & suffering? ;)

@RCV did NOT answer the question. I am shocked that you repeated this. How very disappointing to see this repeated several times on this thread. Tagging separate line items in a split transaction was clearly what was asked for and @RCV 's solution does not give the user that. I feel like people should bill Quickbooks for running us around like this.

Adding another voice to this request. The tag feature is almost useless without being able to individually tag splits. Please fix this QBO people.

I would agree.  I am new to QBO and we have multiple events running.  I have income from those event coming in and have to split transactions.  There is no way to accurately run a P & L without capturing the split transactions.  Why can''t QBO add a tag option when categorizing split transactions?

Can I tag a split transaction with two tags and have each tag associated with a specific portion (dollar amount) of the split?

I am in agreement with others. I have a client that already use classes, but we also use tags. They may pay an advertising bill for several different locations, but  there is no way to put to different areas via tag. I had read there was a way around to get around. Can someone give it to me? I would appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

Can I tag a split transaction with two tags and have each tag associated with a specific portion (dollar amount) of the split?

Hi @DVF1,

Thank you for visiting the Community space. I'm here to provide some clarification about adding tags in QuickBooks Online.

I also agree it would be beneficial to include tags to split transactions. The feature helps provide better insights into your income and expenses from QuickBooks.

However, the ability to enter tags into different areas is unavailable. When splitting transactions, the only workaround is to utilize the Class or Description field.

Our product engineers provide updates regularly to improve the features and options. For now, I highly recommend sending feedback about the tags directly to our engineers.

We also make changes and adjustments based on user feedback. Here's how:

  1. Click the Gear icon in the upper-right corner.
  2. Select Feedback under Profile.
  3. Share your feedback.
  4. Hit Next to submit.

Any updates about the feature will show in our Tags article in QuickBooks. You can bookmark this link for your additional reference for QuickBooks Online: What are tags and why should I use them?.

Mention me in the comment section if you have additional questions or concerns about your split transactions. I'll be here to help. Take care always.

Has this feature been added?  As past posters have stated, tags are worthless otherwise.

It is now the end of 2022.  Is there any reason why this hasn't been addressed? My home version of Quicken has this feature!

This is a MAJOR failure of the Tag system, which otherwise is very useful.  There is NO work around.  This needs to be fixed in QuickBooks and as soon as possible.  You are now forcing that we make deposits over separately transactions in order to support this functionality.  Really not thought out.

Can I tag a split transaction with two tags and have each tag associated with a specific portion (dollar amount) of the split?

I may have figured out a SOLUTION to this problem.  I was having the same issue and tried to figure the best/easiest way to correct this.

1.  First Categorize your expense.

2.  Then click on your "Categorized" transactions.

3.  Find your transaction and click on the purple category description to pull up the full "Bank Deposit" page - where you're able to edit the transaction.

4.  At the bottom of the page, click on "More" (it should be listed next to "Make recurring").

5.  When the pop-up window comes up, click on "Copy" (note: this may only be available for withdrawals/expenses).

6.  This should make a copy of the transaction in your bank register (note: the duplicate transaction won't show up in your "Categorized" list, but it will show up in your bank register).

7.  Click on "Go to bank register" at the top right of your transactions page.

8.  From there, you should be able to open the bank register for whichever account that the transaction was in, find the 2 transactions (1 being a copy), and you should be able to manually adjust the amount for each transaction, and also create a separate tag for each transaction.

I know other people have mentioned before about manually creating a separate transaction for the amounts that you need to split, but this may be an easier/quicker way to do so.  It also shouldn't mess up your balance, because your "Categorized" transaction should still show the total amount of that transaction.  But when you click into it, you will see it only listed for the amount that you manually entered.  This should also correctly show only that manually entered amount when you run P&L reports by tag groups.

Hope this helps!!!

@bjohnson Totally in Agreement!!  I have sent many messages about issues to the engineers through feedback in the gear icon and I NEVER get a response and NOTHING ever changes.  It is definitely a waste of time.
