Data Migration to New Quickbooks Desktop

I have an old 2016 version of Quickbooks Desktop that is licensed by my previous CPA.  I am purchasing a new version of Desktop Premier that will be licensed by my Company.  How do I properly migrate my business data? I am closing out the year in 2023 and then will use the new Desktop Version on a new Computer beginning in the year 2024.  How do I properly upload the 2016 Company Backup file during the installation of the new Desktop Version on the new Computer?

Data Migration to New Quickbooks Desktop

Open your company file on QB Desktop 2016 and secure the backup file.

Try to restore the backup file on your new QB Desktop 2023. If you didn't encounter any error message, you can remove your QB Desktop 2016 program on your machine. Make sure you can login to your CAMPS as the Primary Contact and find your license code for QB Desktop 2023 there.

Data Migration to New Quickbooks Desktop

Welcome to the Community, @vaiconsultant1.

To properly move your 2016 company backup file to your new computer desktop version, you have to update your company files in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). Let me guide you through the process.

First, we have to prepare your company file by opening the company file you want to update in your original QBDT. You can press F2 to open the Product Information window and look for the information. Kindly take note of where you have saved your company file on your computer.

Let’s then proceed with updating your company file. Kindly follow the steps I am providing below:

  1. On your new QBDT, go to File, then pick Open or Restore Company.
  2. Click on Open a company file, then choose Next.
  3. Select your saved company file, then choose Open to open it.
  4. Log in to your company file as an administrator user.
  5. Choose Update Now.
  6. Click Done as soon as QuickBooks is finished.

You can check out this article, which will give you all the information you need on the steps I've outlined above: Update your company files to a new version of QuickBooks Desktop.

You can also save your company files to a local hard drive and move them back when you open them in your new QBDT if you have stored them on a server.

Let me know if you have further inquiries about moving your files to QBDT by hitting the Reply button and leaving a comment. I’m just right here to assist you. Have a good one!
