Insufficient Permissions

My environment:  Single Quickbooks user running Accountant Desktop 2015 on Windows 10.

Situation:  I always get the "insufficient permissions" error when trying to open my company file, even though I do have full read/write access to the folder and data file.   This started happening about 3-4 months ago, even though I hadn't changed anything related to permissions (and prior to this I had no issues).   I have found that by going into my folder permissions, "DENY"ing all users access, then resetting full user access to appropriate users (including "QBDateServices...." seems to reliable fix the problem and give me access to my file in Quickbooks.   But when I shut down and restart  Quickbooks, I once again get the fatal "insufficient permissions" error.

My question:  There has got to be a better way.  How can I once and for all set my permissions so I don't have to "DENY" and reset permissions every time I use Quickbooks.  Any help is appreciated.

QB 2015 is not considered Compatible with W10. QB 2015 reached End Of Life in May 2018.

This really isn't the issue: "even though I hadn't changed anything related to permissions"

Windows 10 gets updated twice a month. One significant change from W7 or 8 to 10 is User Rights and permissions and access.

You are already Past the date of moving to QB 2019, which has been out for 6 months, already. And any data file in QB 2015 is now 4 years behind current. Intuit has a 3-year lifecycle, so now is good time to Not Keep stalling.

We can fix it, calroger.

Are you accessing your working company file in a server? If so, we can transfer it into your local computer hard drive since you only have single user environment. This way, we can prevent this error in the future.

Here's how to transfer your company file:

  1. Close QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Browse to the location of your company file.
  3. Right-click the company file (.qbw), then select Copy.
  4. Browse to the default location, right-click and select Paste. Location: C://Users/Public/PublicDocuments/Intuit/QuickBooks/Company Files.
  5. Open the company file from the default location.

If the file saves without any issues, your folder has the correct permissions. Otherwise, try to set up folder permissions to share company files.

Please post more questions about QuickBooks, and we'll be glad to help.

Make sure to right click the new installer, select Run as Admin. And the QB desktop icons, I either Right Click and Run as Admin, or edit them and change their properties, to Run as Admin and for All users. This is part of W10 access rights.

Good day, dshu.

Can you tell me what can I help you with? Is it about the Insufficient Permission error Or is it something else?

On the other hand, you can go to this page for some How Do I steps: Help Articles.

I'll be keeping an eye for your response. Have a great day!

Upgrading to 2019 has nothing to do with it. I was tasked to migrate a server running 2019 to a new server running Windows 10. Same problems. It took hours to address this issue, even though I had zero problems with moving files to and deleting files from that shared network folder on the server. I tried all the suggestions. QB support chat was completely useless. I got it to work properly by mapping a network drive from the server after moving the QB file into the shared Public documents.
