Moving QB desktop to server

I had to install QB Enterprise on my desktop as the "server". We now have a new server and I need to move it onto the server.

Moving QB desktop to server

A warm welcome to the Community, geoquest1.

I'd be glad to assist you with moving your QuickBooks Desktop to a server. Let's get started.

As an initial step, let's create a backup copy of your data to save everything in your company file. Here's how:

  1. Go to the File menu, choose Back Up Company, then select Create Local Backup.
  2. Select Local Backup.
  3. In the Tell us where to save your backup copies field, select Browse and select the location in which to save the backup copy. Click OK.
  4. In the Create Backup window, specify whether to back up automatically, and select Options to set options for automatic backups.
  5. Tap New to set a backup schedule in the Schedule Backups dialog.
  6. Hit Finish.

After that, you can follow the steps below to move your QuickBooks Desktop to your server computer.

Step 1: Set up QuickBooks Desktop:

  1. If you haven't already, follow the steps to download and then install QuickBooks Desktop on your server computer.
  2. Choose Custom and Network install for the install type.
  3. Select I'll be using QuickBooks Desktop on this computer, AND I'll be storing... if you want the full version of QuickBooks Desktop on your server computer. Or if you just want your server computer to host your files, select I will NOT be using QuickBooks Desktop on this computer...
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish the install.

If you want to keep your files on a mapped network drive, follow the steps to map the drive. Once done, you can proceed with setting up your folder's permissions. Here's an article with the detailed steps (continue to Step: 2): Set up and install a multi-user network for QuickBooks Desktop. On the same link, you'll find a write-up on how to scan the folder.

In case you need help with moving your files to another computer, you can take a look at this article: Move your company files. This will provide you details on how to manage your data as well as steps to restore them.

If you need any additional help with these steps, let me know in the comment below. I need to make sure I've got you covered and I'll be right here for any follow-up QuickBooks concerns. Have a good one!
