Problems connecting to my Coastal Credit Union account. Worked until recently, now I am getting an error 185. Go to accounts page and try to reconnect but no luck. Why?

I go to settings-->Transactions-->manage accounts and try to connect from there. I am given the prompt, "For your security, Coastal Federal Credit Union requires additional verification info. (185)" I am given no specific steps to what info is necessary to verify, or how to resolve this. But, I am given the option to receive a temporary code via text. Getting the code does not resolve the issue, either.

Every once in a while my account will connect, seemingly randomly, but within a day the connection drops again and I am left with the same problem.

Until a couple of months ago I did not encounter this issue. Right around the same time QB raised my subscription fee by an additional $10 a month, saying that they were "improving the user experience," thus the increased cost. What a load of BS.

I've checked our records and haven't seen any similar issues like yours, fjv.

I want to make sure that this matter is addressed promptly. To begin, let's perform basic troubleshooting steps. You may have accumulated too much historical data. Whenever you visit a website, it saves some information from the web page in its cache. These files allow the websites you visit most often to load faster. Not to worry, clearing them will do the trick.

First, let's try accessing your account through an incognito window to rule out the possibility of a webpage issue. You can refer to these shortcut keys to open an incognito window in all supported browsers:

  • Chrome: Ctrl Shift N
  • Firefox: Ctrl Shift + P
  • Safari: Command Shift N

Once done, connect your bank again. If it works, switch back to your regular browser. Then, clear its cache. This way, you can access QuickBooks with a clean slate. You can also use a different supported one.

If the issue persists, I suggest contacting your bank to inquire about the possibility of connecting your account to QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE).

In the meantime, you may consider uploading your data manually in QuickBooks. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Transaction menu.
  2. Click Add transaction.
  3. Enter the amount and a description.
  4. Tap the Select a Category link. Select the best category to organize your transaction.
  5. If you have a receipt, you can drag and drop it onto the form.
  6. Hit Save.

You can check this link to help choose the correct category: Updates to expense categories.

Furthermore, here's a helpful resource you can look through to learn more about putting the transactions to the correct line of your Schedule C:

Keep me posted if you have any other questions about connecting your bank to QuickBooks. I'll make sure to get back to you as soon as I can. Have a great day!

Thanks for the reply, Maybelle_S.

Unfortunately, this did not fix the problem.

I followed all of the steps you suggested. As usual, I was given a prompt to request a temporary login code from my bank in order to gain access. This connected my QB account to my bank, but only temporarily. The bank account disconnected again as soon as my QB session timed out.

What I really am looking for is a way to connect my bank account and have it stay connected.

Hi, and thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, this did not fix the issue.

I followed all of the steps you suggested. When I arrived at the bank accounts tab I still got the error (185), I was given a prompt to request a temporary code from my bank in order to gain access. This connected my QB account to my bank, but only temporarily. The bank account disconnected again as soon as my QB session timed out.

What I really am looking for is a way to connect my bank account and have it stay connected.

PS

You'll note in the attachment that the error message says that I need to provide additional info in order to connect to my Coastal account, but there's no indication of what info is required or how to provide said info! Beyond frustrating.

Therefore, the only way I am able to connect to QB Self-employed by way of the temporary code sent to my phone, but this only works sometimes. On the occasions where it does work, the connection drops as soon as my QB session times out (as mentioned above).

Hi, fjv.

I appreciate you for performing the troubleshooting steps shared by my colleague. I'm here to ensure this gets resolved.

When you encounter error 185 when connecting your Coastal Credit Union account, it means the financial institution requires more information after you enter your credentials, such as a security question or one-time passcode.

Since the error keeps appearing, I recommend reaching out to your bank. This way, they can provide the required additional verification info and help you connect your account without any issues. Then, I suggest contacting our QuickBooks Support Team to assist in entering the needed details. It'll also allow them to submit a ticket to our engineering team to alert them about the issue if necessary.

Temporarily, you can manually import your bank data to add all your old and recent transactions in QuickBooks Self-Employed without delays. Then, categorize them to ensure they're linked to the correct category.

Finally, I've added this article to help you organize your income and expenses to determine what areas of your business have the biggest impact: Categorize transactions in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

I appreciate your understanding on this matter. Please know that I'm determined to get this resolved.

Yes, understood. I have reached out to my bank and, so far, they can't seem to answer my questions, either. Seems that they don't want to take responsibility for this issue, nor does QB.

So far, the only thing that seems to work (sometimes) is the temporary code which you mention above, but no one can tell me how to establish a permanent connection between my bank on QB so that I don't have to jump through hoops every time I log in to my account.

Please excuse the frustrated tone, but I've been going back and forth with QB support and my bank and I've burned a lot of time trying to sort this out instead of doing actual work, meanwhile no real answers to this point. I am sure you can understand where I'm coming from.
