QB 2021 latest update for 1099NEC - Forced update

We started getting notification of a QB update yesterday.  It is the one with the new 1099NEC form.

Instead of letting us choose when to install, it appears to be FORCING the update after a user has accessed QB 3 time.  It then no longer offers the "Install Later" option.

Has anyone found a way around this?

I NEED to be able to decide when I want to do the update, not be required to do it by the application.

(QB, I am REALLY unhappy about this.  I've contacted QB support and they say nothing can be done about this.)

Any ideas on how to get around this would be much appreciated.

Thank you and happy holidays,

Heidi

It appears that Intuit is now forcing the download and installation of QuickBooks patches - whether or not you want or need them.

I remember when Intuit - somewhat wisely - noted that, especially for QB Enterprise, it is very important to allow the customer to decide when to install updates. It was stated this was to help them control downtime, the risk of a patch error during business hours, and so on. For example, an Enterprise customer may want to have their IT department install updates on all their computers at once after-hours or on the weekend.

I think they've devolved.  Intuit no longer seems to understand that, for desktop software especially, people expect to have control over their computers. In may cases the need to have such control to preserve business processes during the business day.  If you have a customer waiting for you to process their credit card or record and print a receipt, you do not have time to wait 5 minutes for a patch to be applied - or worse, fail.

Microsoft understands this, and gives us a wide range of options for installing Windows operating system and other software updates - from automatic, to prompted, to not at all.

We should be able to choose.

QB 2021 latest update for 1099NEC - Forced update

I'm seeing the same thing with my clients.  Yesterday morning I got 5 separate calls from one client saying that they were not able to log into QuickBooks due to needing to install an update and there was no longer an option to "Install Later".  None of these users have administrator rights so they could not install the update even if they wanted to.  They're all running off of a citrix environment so I had to go into 3 separate application servers and run the updates from there.  I had to reboot these citrix environments to get everyone completely out of QB to install the updates and reboot again after the updates were installed.  This meant that all of the other applications they use in the Citrix environment were down as well for that time. (over an hour)

I love how QuickBooks support just beats around the bush on answering the questions that are asked here.  I spent 7 hours on the phone with support last week trying to get QB Online to Export to QB Desktop and they essentially say that it cant be done anymore (Requires IE11 32-bit to export the data, bit IE11 is no longer supported by QuickBooks... ::sigh:: "

You think a company this large would have the resources to efficiently answer questions and not just repeat the same garbage we can find in the "Help" section of their website, or at least lie to us and tell us that they are "working on getting this issue fixed".

My client was down for over an hour yesterday because of this forced update and it does not seem like Intuit cares at all.  Intuit support was actually pleasant and helpful to work with a few years back.

If there is an actual support tech for QB out there... it would be great to find out how to prevent this from happening in the future.. .we cant have clients down unexpectedly.  It costs Us as well as Them money and time which is unacceptable, especially at end of year/end of month.

QB 2021 latest update for 1099NEC - Forced update

Hi there, @RobertJ86,

We appreciate your insights and feedback about the recent update patch in QuickBooks Desktop.

This update is rolled out to allow QBDT to support the 1099-NEC form for the upcoming tax filing season. Along with other enhancements for the program.

Updates in the program are controlled by our developers. This includes the option to install the patch manually at a later time or automatically. For accounts set up for auto-updates, the system will prompt users to download the updates the moment they access the 1099 feature.

At the moment, we do not have an official release if the option to install the update later will be implemented any time soon.

Having this preference would be helpful for clients without Admin rights to the company file. For now, you can send some suggestions to our team so they are notified of your concerns with the release patch.

To log a suggestion for our developers, go to the Help menu and select Send Feedback Online.

This thread will remain open for updates and additional questions. Please feel free to post here anytime.

"Yesterday morning I got 5 separate calls from one client saying that they were not able to log into QuickBooks due to needing to install an update and there was no longer an option to "Install Later". One of many reasons patches should never be mandatory. One wonders how dumb QB development will get before someone reels them in?

"If there is an actual support tech for QB out there... it would be great to find out how to prevent this from happening in the future.. .we cant have clients down unexpectedly. It costs Us as well as Them money and time which is unacceptable, especially at end of year/end of month."

And this is another few reasons!

I doubt Intuit is going to change this anytime soon, or ever.  They like it this way, and have become deaf to these sorts of issues.

You might want to just defeat the built in patch feature completely on your client's systems and then download the internet patch when you're good and ready.
