Quickbooks Backup Failure WARNING YOUR DATA MAY BE IN JEOPARDY

I have been using Quickbooks for many years. I have always created my own backups from within QB and saved them on a different media, i.e., second hard drive, etc. As I have gotten more tech savy I have begun to also copy the data to a local NAS, then on to a remote NAS. A lot of copies on 3 different machines on 4 different spindles, the final destination a NAS with two disk failure redundancy.

I figured I was golden. The process was automated from QB creating a local backup every few closes, A nightly xfer down the chain of storage locations....  Good to go...

Yesterday my company file was corrupted. When I looked at my backups I found a LARGE number of .TMP files that contain 12KB. It turns out that the ONLY backups that were completed were the ones that I initiated myself manually. There was a huge failure rate in the creation of automatic backups.

Leson I learned and share. DONT RELY ON AUTOMATIC BACKUPS from within QB. Right now check your backup destination and see how many .TMP files you have. If you have none, then your setup is working as planned. If you have some, remember that each .TMP file represents a faulty ( nonexistant ) backup.  I tried to find a solution to this issue for now, but sticking with the policy of doing a manual backup everytime payroll or tax liabilities are paid is my only option.

Since i did a manual backup after paying payroll liabilities, I only lost some check entries. I am fortunate as this could have been tragic. I don;t do invoicing or billing with QB.  I wonder who is liable for losses like this?  After my problem I looked online and found a few people complaining of this. I saw NO resolution posed.

Post to this thread if you found a bunch of TMP files. Maybe I am 1 in a million. If you find you have far fewer backups than you thught --- YOUR WELCOME!

Good luck!

Paul

Quickbooks Backup Failure WARNING YOUR DATA MAY BE IN JEOPARDY

Thanks for your kind reply. I hope you and your family are safe and well during this pandemic.

I was actually able to get back running with a negligible loss of data. Yay for me... I am. however stumped as to the backup behavior of QB, and before posting here and during my un-fruitful quest for a solution I saw that there are other conversations on the web where there was no resolution.

Hence my warning to all that use the QB autobackuip. Don't count on it. Do manually initiated backups as often as you want a snap of your data.

If anyone knows of the .tmp "backups" with no data and the solution to the problem, don't be shy.

Take care all and don't let the bastards wear you down. I guess in this case I should say virus.
