Quickbooks_Standard_21 entry in All Programs=> Startup

In the Windows Start Menu => All Programs => Startup => there is an entry called Quickbooks_Standard_21.  This runs ""C:\Program Files (x86)\Intuit\QuickBooks 2017\QBW32.EXE" -silent".

My desktop icon runs "C:\Program Files (x86)\Intuit\QuickBooks 2017\QBW32PremierAccountant.exe"

I am looking to remove any item that I can that runs some widget in the background that is not required.  What is QBW32.EXE" -silent" doing and what's the difference between QBW32 and QBW32PremierAccount.

Quickbooks_Standard_21 entry in All Programs=> Startup

Hello there, RangerZ.

Welcome to the Community. It would be my pleasure to answer any questions you may have about these files.

There are a few questions I want to ask to determine why there are two executable files. Did you create a desktop shortcut and rename it to QBW32PremierAccount? If so, did you send it into your desktop? Any additional information you can add would be appreciated.

Once you run a program using the shortcut icon you create, it'll follow the name you enter for the file. If you want to use only one, you can remove the QuickBooks icon on your desktop and use the option from the startup instead.

Keep in touch with me here should you have any additional questions or concerns, I'm always available here for any of your QuickBooks needs.

The shortcut on my desktop and the shortcut in the Start Menu folder for QUICKBOOKS are the same.

This is not the issue.

The issue is the entry in the STARTUP section of the "Start Menu" (lots of "starts" in the text and not all the same) with Quickbooks_Standard_21 in it.

Simply put, what does QBW32.EXE -silent do?

it keeps QB running in the background for quicker start ups.  Not needed IMO and it uses up resources in memory too.

If you do not want it running all the time in the background ...

Menu Edit>Preferences>General>My Preferences tab clear the check mark that says to keep QB running in the back ground for quick start ups.

then delete the QB exe file from the start menu

Please Learn from our input here.

See this Article: https://www.accountexnetwork.com/blog/2011/02/what-is-the-quickbooks-qbdataserviceuser-and-do-i-need...

Standard Users are Windows users for rights for QB to function, such as managing multi-user hosting, etc. Your Standard user is QB "running in the background" and that is no longer available in Preferences, for you to control. However, "user21" is from QB 2011. Do you still have 2011 installed? It is in the Preferences there. If you no longer have the program installed, you can use Windows Services to Disable it for startup.

Sorry for the delay in responding. I wanted to do a new install correctly.

I inherited a process from my predecessor which I have discovered was flawed. We have the QB data on a Windows R2008 Server with the Database Manager only installed on the server. The process for installing was flawed and had me using Custom => Option 2 instead of option 1.  This installs the DB Server manager, QBdatabaseUser[XX] and sets QB to hosting the DB file. This was wrong as I have learned over the past week.

Intuit is imposing a lot of questionable weight on users with no easy way to manage the related config.  As best I can tell it installs:

  • QuickBooks File Manager - This seems only useful for an accounting or bookkeeping company running multiple clients. There should be an option during install to choose or not choose this component.
  • Intuit Data Protect - QB's backup service. This is fee based service and really should have the same install option as well as a config section in Preferences. There is at least one article on disabling this which includes disabling services (QBIDService in services) so not user friendly.
  • QuickBooks_Standard_21 - As noted above, this appears to be a "quick starter" (or memory thief as I call them). Again, prompt during install and offer config in preferences.
  • QuickBooks Update Agent - Again, another helper that should be optional and configurable. I believe that this is QBCFMonitorService. I do leave this on, but the users keep asking if they should update. How about a silent option.  Maybe I am missing something here for a multi-user environment.

As for my install fopar, I am disabling the service for the QBDataServiceUser27 in services and changing the config in the app (Utilities => Stop Hosting Multi-user Mode). Not sure I have fully disabled this.

Not sure what the Web Connector is running for helpers if any or if there is anything else I missed. I agree with Rustler, I do not want all the fluff running.

Regarding the QuickBooks_Standard_21 entry in the startup folder, I do understand the nomenclature for the service users (QBDataServiceUser27) and will agree that the entry should probably read, in this case, QuickBooks_Standard_27.  QB 2011 was not installed on either of the machines in question.  I have removed this entry from the STARTUP menu.

Indirectly related, I think it's time for a redo on the way this product works in multi-user mode. The hardware landscape has changed and this product should support the popular NAS boxes with an easy to install DB Server Manager package (there is a Linux package). It also should support a centralized backup tool set, indeed I think that the DB Server Manager component should include a backup tool set.  If that can run from any PC under Admin, even better.  Standard Users should really not have access to manage backups IMHO.  They can end up all over the place.

I did an install of QB 2017 on a machine that had previously had 2014 and 2016 on it.  Both were  uninstalled but the QuickBooksDB26 service was still there.  Not clear if the Intuit Sync Manager was from one of these.

Hi, @RangerZ.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts here in the Community.

I recommend sending feedback regarding the process of installation to our engineers. Our Engineering Team visits this section regularly to ensure we're delivering on what our customers need.

Here's how to send your feedback:

  1. Go to Help menu and select Send Feedback Online.

Honestly tired of posting QB and Lacerte feedback to the "Black Hole".  If I can not get an acknowledgement e-mail from intuit on my Feedback I am not going to do it any longer.  I have even submitted feedback on getting an acknowledgment on my feedback.

My feedback is a side bar.  I  am hoping that some other user will confirm that I can kill off the processes that I have listed with no impact on the product, indeed maybe better performance.

QB tech support is clueless regarding the technical issues in this post.  I have tried.

Sync Manager died years ago. You can search the web, if you care about the slow demise and End date, which were years ago. For getting rid of it, open each file you manage and see if it still has Sync settings in the Help menu. You seem to be working on a system where the y people like Old Programs; you just now installed QB 2017? That is on its last year of supported life, for instance, You should Just Now, be installed QB 2019. These systems you work on seem to Not be keeping updated and no housekeeping is being done? That isn't an issue for Intuit Support.

"Indirectly related, I think it's time for a redo on the way this product works in multi-user mode. The hardware landscape has changed and this product should support the popular NAS boxes"

It's the Opposite condition. This is a Managed Relational database, and up until QB 2015, you could share from a Static storage device such as NAS because the Program could manage the file. The problem was that a Real Server or multiple users trying to host via the program created Floating Host Error. That's why from QB2015 on, we use Database Manager Hosting Service App at startup. You can put that on NAS, but not As NAS. It needs an OS to have the management functions for concurrent record requests and file locking. That is part of Relational Database Management.

"with an easy to install DB Server Manager package (there is a Linux package)."

The Windows component also is available as Stand alone.

"It also should support a centralized backup tool set"

There is a built in Backup function that you should be using; don't use Mirroring or Carbonite or Mozy or even One Drive or DropBox mirroring of the .qbw.

"I  am hoping that some other user will confirm that I can kill off the processes that I have listed with no impact on the product, indeed maybe better performance."

Yes, none of this is needed unless it relates to the Year of QB you installed and are running. You can always do a complete uninstall and a Clean and a fresh Install choosing only what you need.

File Manager is innocuous. Don't get riled up over something not even deserving of attention. It is a Password Vault and Version manager for the QB consultant. If you don't need, don't launch it.
