Trying to Recover Old Files from Crashed Computer

Hello,

I'm trying to help out my uncle, who has QuickBooks 2013 Pro on an old crashed computer.  He bought a new computer, and he is asking me if I can potentially install QuickBooks 2013 pro onto the new computer and bring over the files of the old QuickBooks onto the new computer.  From what I can tell, there is a singular backup from 2012 that is within the files of the old HDD (I have an HDD reader), and I can access the license number via the qbrregistration.dat file.  The only problem is that they actively used QuickBooks from 2012 till current, but I do not know how to grab all the information that the files have between those two dates.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Trying to Recover Old Files from Crashed Computer

I appreciate your time in visiting the Community space, allensebastian21.

I'll give details and steps on how you can bring the data to the new computer.

You can start by downloading a new installer from the Downloads and Updates page on the new computer.

Here's how:

  1. Go to: https://downloads.quickbooks.com/app/qbdt/products.
  2. Choose how will you be using QuickBooks Desktop on multiple computers at the same time (multi-user mode).
  3. Click Next and select your QuickBooks versions by choosing the country, product, and year version.
  4. Hit Search.
  5. Click the Download button.

Next, install the program on your new computer by following these steps:

  1. Open and run your downloaded QuickBooks.
  2. Click Yes on the pop-up message.
  3. Choose Next to begin the installation.
  4. Select the I accept the terms in the license agreement box and click Next.
  5. Enter your License and Product numbers, then click Next.
  6. Follow the on-screen instruction to complete the installation.

Here's an article to guide you with the process: Install QuickBooks Desktop.

In case you encounter any unexpected errors after the installation, please check out the solutions in this link: Fix Common QuickBooks Desktop Installation Errors.

Finally, you can transfer the company files to another computer. Please be sure to create a backup copy before doing so. I've got this guide to help you out: Move your company files to another computer.

Please feel free to reply on this post if you have any additional questions or need help with other features in your account. We'll be around to give the solutions. Take care and stay safe.

Trying to Recover Old Files from Crashed Computer

Mam,

The issue I have right now is that I can not utilize the old computer to create a backup.  Nor can I utilize the old computer to find out where Quickbooks had saved the files.

When I go to the HDD, which I can still read via an external HDD reader, I can navigate the file explorer; however, I don't know what file or groups of files that I'm looking to then copy and transfer to the new computer.

Please help.

And then from there, where do I put them onto the new computer?
