Howdy, y'all!

We've been attaching files to our invoices and other transactions for years.  We've upgraded our QB Premier Desktop ever three years for quite a while.  Every time we upgrade, the links to attachments in the previous versions are broken.

How can I fix those broken links?

When we upgrade versions, do the old attachment folders get deleted/hidden?

Thanks in advance!

Cody

Thanks for reaching out in the Community, @cody2.

I can help provide the troubleshooting steps in re-linking the attached documents.

This usually happens when renaming or moving the company file to a different location. It will break the connection between the Attached Documents and company file. To fix the problem, here's what you'll need to do:

  1. Browse to the location where your company file is stored and open the Attach folder.
  2. If there is NO folder with the new company file name, change the name of the folder to match the new name of the company file.
  3. If there is a folder with the new company file name, open the folder with the OLD company file name. Copy and paste the contents of the Inbox folder into the Inbox sub-folder of the folder with the new company file name. Copy and paste the contents of the Txn folder into the Txn sub-folder of the folder with the new company name.
  4. From the QuickBooks Company menu, select Documents then Repair Attached Documents Links.
  5. Select Repair Links.

This should repair the broken attached documents links. If you may encounter other common issues related to the Document Center, you can also check this helpful article: QuickBooks Document Center: FAQs and common issues.

Keep me posted if you have additional questions about the process. I'm always here to help.

Can you copy the "attach" from one version of QB to another version of QB?

For example, I am running QB Desktop PRO 2018. I have kept the books for a company that recently purchased QB Desktop PRO 2019 and they would like me to copy their company information from my 2018 to their copy of QB 2019. When I "restored" the backup copy from my 2018 to their 2019 version, the program asked to update the data file for the newer version. This was completed and seems to be working fine. However, when I copied the "append" file from my 2018 computer and pasted it to their 2019 computer, I cannot get the program to find or open and of the "append" PDF documents. When I copy and paste the "append" from 2018 to another computer with 2018, I don't have any problem.

Do I need to update the "append" file from 2018 so that it can be used in 2019?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Lou

Hi @LCecchini,

The Attach folder contains documents, so there isn't a need, or an option to update it.

If the QuickBooks Desktop 2019 is unable to scan the Attach folder you copied from QuickBooks Desktop 2018, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the directory where your company file is stored.
  2. Make a new Attach folder.
    • Rename the Attach folder.
    • Create a new folder and name it Attach.
  3. Copy the contents from the old folder.
    • In the new Attach folder, create a folder that matches the name of the company file, then open the new folder.
    • Create sub-folders named Inbox and TXN.
    • Copy and paste contents over to respective new folders from their old counterparts.
  4. Go to the QuickBooks Company menu, highlight Documents, then select Repair Attached Documents Links.
  5. Press Repair Links.
