Hi –
Let’s say I have an item I need to update in QuickBooks. This item will now require 20 parts instead of 5. What is the fastest and most efficient way to enter this Bill of Material (BOM) of at least 20 parts?
I’m using QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise.
Let’s say, an item has a BOM of 75 parts, what’s the most efficient way to enter all the parts of that BOM in QB?
Thank you!
Hello Dav,
Thanks for stopping by the Community this afternoon. My suggestion to you is to set up the BOM then add it to an item called inventory assembly, this way you can use that item to start building your product. To see how to assemble your product, you can check out this link: Combine your inventory items to build finished goods. Below I'm listing the steps to set up your products bills of materials.
I also recommend checking out this helpful article, it highlights the steps above as well as other useful information: Set up your products bill of materials.
If you have any other questions, or concerns, feel free to post down below. Thank you for your time and have a nice Monday afternoon.
Hi @Nick_M and QB Community -
Which is the fastest most efficient way to enter all the parts in a BOM? Is there a way to copy and paste into QB all the parts for a BOM? Or, is there a way to upload the BOM into QB?
Thanks for the response, @Dav.
At this time, my colleague @Nick_M has provided the fastest, most efficient way to enter all the parts in a BOM. I'm going to submit feedback to the Product Development Team about adding different ways to input this information, like uploading or pasting it in. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please don't hesitate and reach back out! Have a great rest of your day.
Consider having a 3rd party tool to do so

Hi Ashley and QB Team -
Have there been an updates on QB enabling a better way to enter a lengthy Bill Of Materials?
Thanks for coming back, Dav.
I know it’s convenient to have a better way of entering lengthy bill of materials. As of now, it’s still unavailable in QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise. You may consider using a third-party tool as suggested by our Community backer, Fiat Lux – ASIA.
Our Desktop App Center contains several tools that can be integrated with QuickBooks. Just enter a keyword in the Search field, then read each feature to learn more.
You can check this reference about tracking and setting up a list of all the components you use to build a single product: Track the products you manufacture.
Don’t hesitate to let us know if you have other concerns besides bill of material updates. The Community team is always to help you. Keep safe!
This is the most horrible way to solve that problem, it may look good for a moment, but you'll come to regret this very soon. The only proper way is to input the complete Bill of materials in each assembly and not have sub assemblies.
If you retain sub assemblies, you will need to build all of those in order for you to build the main assembly. In my case it means you are building 5 assemblies to actually build one... I'm changing all current assemblies to fully be stock parts only. Saving me 100s of builds
