Can QuickBooks 2008 be run in Windows 10 or 11?

Is it possible to run QuickBooks 2008 in Windows 10 or 11?

I have a friend who uses QuickBooks 2008 in Windows XP on a very old computer. She wants to get a new computer, but if 2008 won't run under a new version of Windows, she'll have to upgrade that as well, and she doesn't want to spend over $600/year.

I've come across different answers online. Some say it can't be done. Some say it can be done if you download old versions of certain Windows components, which I don't want to get into. Some say it can be done if you run it in Windows 7 compatibility mode (which I don't mind doing).

Is there a definitive answer?

Can QuickBooks 2008 be run in Windows 10 or 11?

Welcome to the Community space, @jeyges.

Let me help you clear things out. QuickBooks 2008 is no longer supported by our system.

However, you can continue operating it on your computer. Yet, for any issues that will persist while using it, you no longer have the access to contact support.

Regarding your Windows model, I recommend getting in touch with Microsoft contact support. To ask for insights if you can downgrade your system to make it compatible with your QuickBooks 2008 as Windows 10 and above is now supported by QBDT 2020.

For additional assistance in understanding Quickbooks system requirements, don't hesitate to reply to this post. Keep safe.

Thank you, but this doesn't answer my question. Microsoft isn't going to know whether or not an old version of Quicken can run in Windows 10. They'll just tell me to contact Intuit.

@jeyges

If you are using Windows 10 Home (not Windows 10 Pro), you may be able to run QB 2008 in Win 7 compatibility mode. Outdated versions of QuickBooks Desktop require Internet Explorer to run. Another issue is your budget. At the moment you can still consider going for QB Desktop 2023 Pro for a single user to meet your budget.

Right, but I'm looking for a definitive answer: "Yes you can" or "No you can't".

Also, even the desktop version of QB (which I think is being phased out anyway) is now on a subscription plan - and the prices have become astronomical.

Running QB in compatibility mode is the workaround. In our experience, there's no definitive answer until you try it for yourself on your own computer. If you are reluctant to buy a new subscription license for QB Desktop and you are working solo on a desktop (PC or Mac) to manage your book and only need basic features, you should explore a free program. You can use the program for as long as you like, use all the features and enter as much data as required. There are no time limits, no usage limits, no ads (at this time). This program is quite popular in Asia and Europe.

I wouldn't say it's solved. I've been given suggestions which may or may not work out - and I still don't know whether or not QB 2008 will work under Windows 10 or 11.

Can QuickBooks 2008 be run in Windows 10 or 11?

Hi.... I have been using QuickBooks 2008 on windows 10 for the past few years now. No issues whatsoever aside from I can't email and documents straight from QuickBooks.

Any way jus today my QuickBooks stopped working.... It says error 3317....something got to do with the license.

I guess this is what it means.... Now I don't have support.... I'm on my own..

BTW the last time I backed up was a month ago.....

I see how this issue becomes challenging for you, @Sauwee

You can count on me to help you fix this. There are several reasons why you're QuickBooks isn't responding when sending an email and the same goes for error 3371 which you couldn't initialize license properties.

Most of the time, if you use WebConnect with QuickBooks Enterprise or Right Networks, you'll see this error if you open the file before you save it. You must first save the file before you import the QBO file.

With this in mind, installing the QuickBooks Tool Hub is the initial step in fixing common errors like this. Remember to close your QuickBooks whenever you use the tool hun and we recommend using the Tool Hub on Qindows q0, 64-bit.

Here's how:

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Download the most recent version (1.6.0.3) of the QuickBooks Tool Hub. Save the file somewhere you can easily find it (like your Downloads folder or your Windows desktop). Note: If you've installed Tool Hub before, you can find out which version you have. Select the Home tab. The version will be on the bottom.
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
  5. When the installation finishes, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub.

Note: If you can't find the icon, do a search in Windows for QuickBooks Tool Hub and select the program.

From there, we'll need to run the 3371 Error fix. By going to QuickBooks Tool Hub.

  1. Select Installation Issues.
  2. Choose 3371 Error Fix.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Begin with QuickBooks Desktop and open your data file.

Another way around this is to reinstall QuickBooks Desktop. After reinstalling, if the same error persists, then we'll need to work with a qualified IT professional or contact Microsoft.

There might be damage to your Windows Operating System.

For future use, if you need to install or move QBDT to another computer, we'll show you you can do it by reading this article: Move or reinstall QuickBooks Desktop to another computer.

I'll always be here if you need additional help in managing your QBDT account. Take care.

You state that although the program is no longer supported, you can continue to operate it on your computer.  That is not always so.  I have QuickBooks Pro 2007.  I recently had to purchase a new computer with Windows 11.  I reinstalled my QuickBooks program and it worked fine.  However, I kept getting the "Register your Product" pop-up.  When I tried to register (I have my original product number and license number) it would not accept it and said I needed to call Intuit.  When I did, I got a sales pitch to buy a QuickBooks subscription, which I declined.  The registration window has closed and I am locked out of my program.  The "Desktop Expert" I chatted with said I needed to upgrade to the latest version of QuickBooks and kept repeating that.  That doesn't seem fair, since I paid for the original program, don't need product support, don't need to use it online, and I just want access to the program installed on my computer.

@JB 27

According to their EULA, they have the right to refuse to activate an outdated version. Consider to purchase a newer non subscription license to upgrade your version.

So I have to pay ransom (i.e. purchase a subscription) to even access the files on my computer and that is fair?
