Changing Default Browser in QB Desktop

Since there seems to be no solution to Changing Default Browser in QB Desktop -

What alternative bookkeeping software are the members here considering? I have lost faith that Intuit gives a crap (he didn't say crap!) and it is time to move on, cut our loses and manage our finances in a different solution.

I would really really be interested in what others are recommending. I have been frustrated with QB for years and have to make a decision by May. We used to be on Peachtree and loved it but it got so cost prohibited we had to find an alternative.

What is really amazing is to see the complete and total lack of concern and criminal level of built in incompetence and money grabbing by QB.  From a complete inability to find anyone capable of fixing issues that should be addressed by QB in house technical support to chat agents who disconnect you when they have no answer or who give you a phone number to call for assistance with payroll support that turns out to not be support. Disgusting. Can only hope someone figures out soon how to provide a product that competes directly with QB.

To all QB Team members:

[Removed] upon you and all your platitudes. We all know your QB default browser is set to IE and no ones bank uses it anymore so we are all screwed because; a) you didn't see this coming (despite all the advanced warnings) b) you just don't give a [removed] (the more likely of the two.) It is now May '21. WHERE IS THE FIX?

There will never be a fix. They want to force users to upgrade every year. The only relief would be if there was some litigation around this. There are other pieces of software that have the clunking IE built inside of it as well. Intuit feels like they can tell you they promised a timeframe that a 2-year-old product works. Effectively unsupported. I would not be surprised for them to try and eliminate other data feeds that work or change the format of QBO files.

We have officially reached the end of IE11. What is QB's proposed solution?

Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) desktop application retires on Windows 10 on June 15, 2022 (non-LTSC, non-Server)

Today we announced that the future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 is in Microsoft Edge. Internet Explorer mode (IE mode) provides legacy browser support within Microsoft Edge. Because of this, the IE11 desktop application will be retired on June 15, 2022. This means that the IE11 desktop application will no longer be supported and afterwards will redirect to Microsoft Edge if a user tries to access it.

Internet Explorer 11 desktop application

How this will affect your organization:

If your organization has legacy sites and apps with IE dependencies, you will need to set up IE mode so that users can access them through Microsoft Edge. Microsoft Edge, with Internet Explorer mode, is the only browser with built-in compatibility for legacy IE-based sites and apps. It also gives your organization world-class compatibility with a dual-engine advantage:

  • Microsoft Edge renders IE-based sites and apps using IE mode.
  • Microsoft Edge renders modern sites and apps using Chromium.

IE mode support follows the lifecycle of Windows Client, Server, and IoT releases at least through 2029. Additionally, Microsoft will give one year notice to deprecate the IE mode experience in-market when the time comes.

Reminder: This new announcement builds on our previous one. As communicated in MC220490 (August ’20), Microsoft 365 apps and services will no longer support IE11 after August 17, 2021; after this date, Microsoft 365 apps and services will be unable to connect, or have a degraded feature experience, when accessed on IE11. Other Microsoft products and services are also ending support for IE11. For a full list, please see our Microsoft apps and services to end support page.

What you need to do to prepare:

To prepare, we recommend setting up Microsoft Edge in your organization. If your organization needs legacy browser support, you will want to set up IE mode in Microsoft Edge.

  • View the Microsoft browser usage report in the Microsoft 365 Admin center to help size IE usage in your organization. Appropriate permissions required.
  • Use the Getting Started guide to learn how to set up Microsoft Edge in your organization, configure Internet Explorer mode (if needed), and move your end users.
    • FastTrack can help with deployment and configuration at no additional charge for customers with 150 or more seats of Windows 10.
    • For help with web app and site compatibility, especially if you have legacy site concerns after configuring IE mode, learn more about the App Assure program.

Is this still an issue in June 2021? My bank feeds have also stopped working due to Banking Institutions do not support Internet Explorer. Hopefully by this late date there has been resolution of this issue??

Hello, Accounting Associates LLC. I can help you bring in bank transactions into QuickBooks Desktop.

We can import them using the.QBO format. Let me walk you through how:

  1. Sign in to your bank and download the transaction as .QBO file.
  2. Then, in your QBDT. Go to the File menu
  3. Select Utilities then Import and then click Web Connect Files.
  4. Click the .QBO file you saved, then select Open.
  5. Select your bank account.
  6. Click Continue
  7. You should see a dialogue box telling you that the data has been successfully read into QuickBooks and select OK.
  8. Then, go to the Bank Feeds Center.

Here's an article you refer to for more details: Import webconnect (.qbo) files.

Also, I got an article that can help you in reconciling your accounts accurately: Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Desktop.

A little tidying up with sweeping this thread under the Intuit carpet. We customers are not the problem here.

The answers is - Yes, Intuit still has other priorities over security for customers using the Desktop product.

Intuit - Do better.

I already use the QBO import function as my work around to Intuit's failure to appropriately update its software for changes in financial industry cybersecurity standards. Please do not patronize me (and other customers) with an inadequate response. Just fix your problem.

Constantly telling us how to manually download banking transactions IS NOT HELPFUL!!! That just sounds like corporate rhetoric and it doesn't instill confidence in your users (PAYING CUSTOMERS). Please FIX this issue or start looking to lose many (including me) of your long-time, loyal customers.

I am also having the same problem. Farmers &Merchants stopped allowing IE 11 as a browser for security reasons. Quickbooks really needs to change the browser. This is ridiculous!

Does anyone have any other accounting software recommendations to switch to? I rely on being able to match bank account with transactions in the software.

Can someone from Intuit please respond to this.  My bank has also now stopped supporting IE.  I have the latest version of Quickbooks Desktop and it only supports IE, which is now completely unsupported by both Microsoft and most banks.  Intuit... you have been promising that you are working on this issue literally for YEARS.  It is no longer acceptable to say you are interested in our feedback if you can't fix this VERY simple problem.  To fix it, you don't need to support multiple browsers.  You just need to pick any modern browser and support that instead of IE, which is no longer a modern browser.  To charge us for this software and not have it use a modern browser is unacceptable.  WHEN WILL THIS BE FIXED?  This is no longer an upgrade request.  This is now a MAJOR SECURITY BUG that needs to be fixed ASAP.  What is your plan??!!

I contacted QB about this issue today.  And they insisted that I get on one of their Pro Plans to resolve the issue. They then sent me "instructions" on how to DYI resolve the issue, since I wouldn't accept paying more money.   NEVER during the conversation did they mention this could be to an IE problem.  I had to do the research myself.  This is very fustrating for a company with several accounts.  I tried using the Utilities option and that doesn't work either.

As a cybersecurity firm, we're currently waiting for June 2022 so that we can declare your software not compliant with protocols such as HIPAA. Many more than those customers posting here have paid for your software, and you continue to collect money from all of us- yet your software is broken and has been for well over a year. This is negligent incompetence.

I was happily using my 2018 desktop pro product.  When I was using the product and attempting to do the bank feeds, Intuit reached into my desktop product and completely blocked the use of the bank feeds and forced me to upgrade to the 2021 product, which also forced me into an annual subscription model to pay every year for the use of the product.

The pitches around the "new and improve" bank feeds center on the website are impressive!!  Looked like I made the right decision on the product!  But every bank feed I attempted to use turned up the same message about IE being blocked for all the reasons stated here.  This is unconscionable.

I'm here to take care of your concern, bphelan12211.

First of all, I appreciate you for sharing your thoughts about the new and improved bank feeds center of QuickBooks Desktop.

Going back to your issue about the Internet Explorer (IE) being blocked, there are actually factors you need to consider when using the said browser in QuickBooks Desktop. Among these are the following:

  • Before troubleshooting, you may want to try the task on another computer to see if it is successful and verify your network (if any) is compatible with QuickBooks.
  • Make sure you update to the latest version of Internet Explorer, IE 11, if you are using Internet Explorer 10 or versions older.

f the IE is not in the latest version, I suggest upgrading to the latest support IE version. For your reference, read this article: Upgrade Internet Explorer to open QuickBooks Desktop.

In the meantime, check out these articles about Internet Explorer settings in QuickBooks Desktop:

I've also included our Reconcile Workflow article for reference. This serves as a guide when reconciling.
