Yes, custom fields do have a rather small length limit that can't be changed.
I've never has this as an issue so I checked. The field length limit appears to be 254 characters.
For example, I was able to enter this "email address":
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB"

Exceeding the character limit of the email address field in the customer profile benefits you and your business. However, being able to change this limit is unavailable in QuickBooks Desktop. Thus, this would be a great time to send this suggestion to our Product Developers.

Well, I don't know how you can know what, since you can't, really.
In any case, what is the character limit of that field? Based on that, in what case would exceeding the character limit of the field benefit anyone? Please explain.
I had the wrong information about the kind of field I was working with, sorry for the confusion.
A custom field was created in the customer record under "additional info". That custom field appears to have a much smaller character limit.
