Company File Update doesn't work

Hello,

We recently updated QuickBooks Enterprise 24 Desktop. It's now requiring us to update the company file. I tried it on one computer, left it running for 20+ hours but it still didn't finish. During the process there was nothing on the screen, just gray. Not even a progress bar. Other people need to use the computer so I had to cancel it. Then I left it running on another computer overnight it crashed saying there was not enough memory. It had 32GB, I don't know if it needs more.

My question is how long does this normally take? How much memory is required? Our company file is 2 GB. I avoid running it on the server computer because if it doesn't work then a lot of processes will be halted. The server has 64 GB. Will that make a difference?

Run the Verify/Rebuild Data utility. Did you encounter any error message?

As soon as I open the file, it tells me to update. Can I run that without updating the file?

I have the information you need to help you update your company file, jn29. I'll be pleased to share the details so you can proceed with your task.

Once you update your QuickBooks Desktop, you'll also need to update your company file to keep it working on the newer version of the program. QuickBooks needs at least 1GB of space to run the installation process and 2.5 GB to work at peak performance. You can proceed to the "Hardware and operating system requirements" section in this article for more information: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2024.

The speed of the updating process will depend on the available space within your hard drive and your internet connection. It could be that your hard drive no longer has enough space, which you receive the error and makes the process even longer.

To get this resolved, you can refer to these steps to check the free space you have in your hard drive so we can make enough space for the update:

  1. Head to the Window Start menu, then key in File Explorer from the search field and open it.
  2. From the navigation bar, choose  My Computer or This PC.
  3. Right-click the icon for your hard drive that is Windows (C:).
  4. Pick Properties to review the remaining space you have.

After that, scroll down to Step 2 on this material for the detailed process of making some space on your hard drive: Fix there is not enough space on QuickBooks Desktop.

Company File Update doesn't work

We definitely have more than enough space. The Quickbooks software itself has updated successfully. The issue is with the company file update. When I try to open the company file, it's asking me to update the file. I click update then it doesn't show anything. It doesn't show the progress bar or anything. After a few hours it says there is not enough memory. I think 32 GB of memory should be more than enough. The company file is saved locally so the internet speed is not a factor.

  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install.
  5. When the installation finishes, open the Tool Hub on your Windows desktop.
  6. Select Program Problems and click Quick Fix my Program.
