desktop quickbooks is my license,I am self employed and a client I no longer work with bought QB online and needs the data

Hi

I am self employed and used my desktop license for a client.  I no longer have them as a client.  They purchased qb online and need the data that is on the qb desktop which is my license.  They have purchased the online subscription but just need the data transferred.  Customer service stated that the email associated with the desktop data is my email.  How does the client get the data into their qb online version? I am keeping my license to use for other clients.

Hello, @flower3.

Thanks for reaching out to us. I'm here to guide you transfer your client's data from QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) to QuickBooks Online (QBO).

The actual conversion process is really quick and easy. However, you can only directly migrate a QBDT file to QBO using the same email address. As a workaround, you’ll want to create a backup copy and send it to your client. They can install the QBDT trial version to restore the copy. After that, they can export it to QBO.

Here's how to back up a QBDT company file:

  1. Go to the File menu again and hover over Back up Company.
  2. Select Create Local Backup.
    Capture.JPG
  3. In the window, select Local Backup and then Next.
  4. In the Local Backup Only section, click Browse and choose where you want to save your backup company file.
  5. Set the number of backups you want to keep. This is optional.
  6. This runs a test to make sure your backup file is in good shape before you save.
  7. When you're ready, select OK.
  8. Select Save it now and Next.

When it's done, you get a confirmation message. As another option, you'll want to manually export lists from QBDT using a CSV or XLS file. Then, import it to QBO. You may import the following information to QuickBooks Online:

  • Bank Data
  • Customers
  • Vendors
  • Chart of Accounts
  • Products and Services
  • Invoices

@flower3

Which QB Desktop year version do you have? You can send them the backup file. They will install the trial version for QB Desktop to restore the file and convert it to QB Online.

Hello,

Thank you for the information.  I will not be able to try your suggestion until after Thanksgiving holiday.  I will let you know the results.

Again, thank you.
