Document Attachments didn't follow with backup restore

I had to restore of my client files, in doing so the attached documents did not follow the new file. I can see that there is an attachment however when double clicking to view the file cannot be found. I see it the previous file the attached folder has or appears to have these files in it. How to I move these/copy these into the new file?

Did I make any sense of this question?

Thank you!

The link you provided just takes me to the community website without a solution unless I didn't understand the link.

The attachments are located in the Attach folder which is in the same original location as your company file. If no one has access to its original location, your attachment data is lost.

Document Attachments didn't follow with backup restore

Good day, @jdrichardson.

Allow me to join the thread and share further insights about restoring backup files in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

Once you restore a backup, the program doesn't include the locally stored Attached Documents.

You should make a manual backup of the Attach folder. This can be found in the same location as your QuickBooks company file. Then, paste it into the same location as your restored company file. For more info, you can check out this article: QuickBooks Attached Documents: FAQs and common issues.

If your files can't be found, it's possible that the connection between the Attached Documents and the company file was broken. This usually happens once a company file is renamed or moved to a different location. To fix the problem, re-link the Attached Documents. Here's how:

  1. Browse to the location where your company file is stored and open the Attach folder.
  2. Follow the steps that apply to your situation:
    • If there is NO folder with the new company file name, change the name of the folder to match the new name of the company file.
    • If there is a folder with the new company file name:
      1. Open the folder with the OLD company file name.
      2. Copy and paste the contents of the Inbox folder into the Inbox sub-folder of the folder with the new company file name.
      3. Copy and paste the contents of the Txn folder into the Txn sub-folder of the folder with the new company name.
  3. From the QuickBooks Company menu, click Documents and select Repair Attached Documents Links.
  4. Click Repair Links.
