When I am entering donations as sales receipts, many times when I hit "save and close" I get an error message. It says it cannot save because it is calculating sales taxes. There should never be sales taxes on these items which have been set up as non-taxable. The "work around" is to click the tax box and then unclick it and save. Today I am entering well over 100 transactions. The extra step is inefficient. Is there a setting I can change so it doesn't do this, or is it a glitch in the software.
I appreciate you sharing your query here with us, Breeeze. Let me help resolve the error received when entering Sales Receipts with non-taxable items in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
In QBO, the program follows the settings set up on each of your items when creating transactions. With that, please make sure the products and services in your account were set up as Non-taxable to ensure these don't calculate sales taxes.
In addition, this similar error occurs if you've entered the sum of your item under the Amount field but haven't clicked out of the amount section, so it hasn't been able to calculate the tax on it. Thus, it's best to hit on the Tab key to move to a different box or click other areas of the transaction.
I've included a screenshot for reference.
However, if the same thing happens, you'll have to manually uncheck the taxable column to help save or print the entries without any indication of it being taxable.
If you're able to create invoices efficiently, you may get back to your default browser and clear its cache or use a different supported browser.

If you read my post, you apparently did not understand it.
1) My charitable organization has three items that are set up as donations. None of which is taxable.
2) Donations are entered as sales receipts. The sales tax box in the item line is not checked.
3) Nothing is showing as taxable and there is no tax amount showing. It looks correct.
4) I click "SAVE and CLOSE".
5) I may or may not get an error message "We can't save your transaction right now. Your taxes are still being calculated." This does not happen every time. I haven't found any common denominator. It could be any one of the three donation types.
6) I believe it's a glitch because it happens randomly.
Thanks for getting back to this forum, Breeeze. Let's collaborate to troubleshoot this error message and enhance your donation entry experience in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
The numerous cached files in your browser can sometimes cause unusual behavior in your QuickBooks Online (QBO). I recommend performing these troubleshooting steps to isolate the issue with saving sales receipts.
To start, let's access your account through an incognito window to rule out the possibility of a webpage issue. You can refer to these shortcut keys below to open an incognito window in all supported browsers:
Mozilla Firefox: CTRL + Shift + P
Microsoft Edge: CTRL + Shift + N
Google Chrome: CTRL + Shift + N
Safari: Command + Shift + N
After starting a new private browsing session, please log into your QBO account and check if the error no longer appears when saving a sales receipt. If yes, proceed to clear your browser's cache to help the program run smoothly and eliminate technical issues. You can also use other devices and supported browsers as alternatives.
Additionally, I’m excited to share some valuable resources that will help you effectively manage your sales receipts in QBO. These resources cover how to personalize the sales form and add discounts. Ensuring you have the tools to streamline your donation entries and enhance your overall experience.
