Enterprise Desktop Set-up

Is anyone using Enterprise Desktop on a peer-to-peer network? Do you have any problems with multi-user connectivity?

 

We upgraded from QP Pro 2019 several months ago but continue to have multi-user issues from time to time. We think we figured out the problem, in that we have not been installing the QB updates in the proper order.  I recently contacted our IT company to ask if they would handle the updates going forward, and I received a scathing reply which stated, among other things, that we did not configure Enterprise in the proper way because according to the IT guy, Enterprise MUST be a client/server environment and NOT on peer-to-peer network.  They are recommending we purchase a server, which I believe might be overkill. On a normal workday, there are 2 users logged in at the same time, on occasion 3 users, and rarely 4 users which is the max number of users ever logged in simultaneously. Everything I see on Intuit's site does list peer-to-peer as an workable configuration. We had used prior versions of QB in a peer-to-peer set up for 20+ years and it worked fine until our company file grew too large, which is why we were told to switch to Enterprise. Thank you in advance for any input or insight you can provide.

I'd be glad to lend a hand with setting up QuickBooks for multi-user access.

 

When hosting in multi-user mode, it's crucial to set up everything correctly. Since the computer storing a company file (the host) allows other computers to access the file, the proper setup varies from the mode chosen.

 

You’ll want to turn on the folder and windows access permissions to share company files. This makes sure workstations can access and work with your clients. Here’s how:

 

  1. Right-click the folder that carries the company file.
  2. Go to Properties, then select Security and Edit.
  3. Choose QBDataServiceUserXX and then click Full Control.
  4. Press Allow.
  5. Click Apply, and then press the OK button.

 

Once done, follow these instructions below:

 

  1. Press Windows + E keys to open File Explorer.
  2. Find and right-click the folder containing your company files.
  3. Move to Properties> Sharing> Shared Add.
  4. Choose the corresponding QBDataServiceUserXX for your version.
  5. Set permission level of both users to Full Control and Share.

Thank you, but as I said, we are already set up and running QB Enterprise. I am asking if anyone else uses QB Enterprise as peer-to-peer vs. central server.

You don't need to invest in a dedicated server as long as the host computer meets the recommended requirements for handling multi-user connections. We have many clients working in multiuser mode without a dedicated server.
