Error Message - Don't have proper permission to update

Every time I log in, I get the error message:

"There is a new Quickbooks  software update waiting for you.

Looks like you don't have the required permissions.  Contact your system administrator."

I AM the system administrator and the only one on the account.

How can I fix this?

Error Message - Don't have proper permission to update

I'll share some solution that you can perform to get rid of the error message, @Deb143.

If you’re using multi user mode, you can exit it to successfully update in single user mode. If your other users use remote access from different computers, the same update must be installed in single user mode on those PCs as well. Once done, you can return to multi-user mode.

If you've already installed a QuickBooks Desktop update, we can perform some troubleshooting to disable this notification. Let’s get your QuickBooks Desktop information from your Account Management Portal before we start:

  • Download the installer for your version of QuickBooks.
  • Take note of your license number, product year and version.

After that, let’s start the Clean Install process. Don’t worry, I’ll walk you through the process.

Here’s how:

  1. Open the Windows Start menu. Search for Control Panel and open it.
  2. Select Programs and Features or Uninstall a Program.
  3. Choose the QuickBooks Desktop version you're having issues with from the list of installed programs.
  4. Click Uninstall/Change and then Remove. Select Next.  If you don’t see this option, sign out and sign back into Windows as an admin.
  5. Once done, reinstall QuickBooks Desktop.

After that, log in to your Company File again.

If the error message still prompts, I recommend contacting our Desktop Support Team for further assistance. They have the tools to conduct a screen-share to investigate this behavior.

Error Message - Don't have proper permission to update

I am in single-user mode, although I use QBox for multi-user access.  Could this be the issue?  I am currently the only user (primary admin) on this account.

Error Message - Don't have proper permission to update

Thanks for getting back to us in the Community, @Deb143. I’ll further assist you fixing this issue with the error message you encountered in QuickBooks Desktop.

This error is possibly due to a Windows user permission which isn't enough to complete the installation. We can do a couple of things to proceed:

  1. Right-click the icon and select Run as administrator.
  2. Update QuickBooks through website and download web patch updates.
  3. Perform clean installation.

If the issue persists, I recommend consulting with your IT person for assistance with configuring your Windows user.
