Hi All,

Windows 10 pro 22H2

QB Desktop current version and current service pack as of 2023-08-03.

Customer has two licenses.  The satellite computer has no issues.

On the server computer, Quickbooks will freeze randomly in any window.  The customer uses the Task Manager to kill Quickbooks and starts over.  There are no error messages.

I have found nothing wrong with the operating system.

How would you proceed troubleshooting this?

Many thanks,

-T

Thanks for reaching out to us for assistance, @Todd210. Let's perform some troubleshooting measures to resolve QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) constantly freezing when opening any window.

I appreciate the alternative solutions you've performed to fix the issue. When the program is frozen, we can utilize the Quick Fix My Program from the QuickBooks Tool Hub to resolve it.

Here's how:

  1. Close QBDT.
  2. Download the most recent version (1.4.0.0) of the QuickBooks Tool Hub and save it somewhere you can easily locate it.
  3. Once done, open the file (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen procedure to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
  5. When the installation is complete, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open it.

The Quick Fix will close any open background operations QBDT uses. Then, it'll run a quick repair on your program. To do that:

  1. Open the QuickBooks Tool Hub and select Program Problems.
  2. Click Quick Fix My Program.
  3. Start QBDT and open your data file.

If the issue persists, see other options here: Fix issues when QuickBooks has stopped working.

Furthermore, I suggest creating a backup of your company file so you may use it to restore your data if you encounter issues.

Let me know whenever you have additional QBDT-related concerns. I'll ensure to respond to your questions right away. Keep safe.

Hi JaeAnnC,

Already did the Tool Hub thing.  I should have stated that.  It did not help.  (Also in the 28 yeas of doing computer consulting, the tool hub has never fixed an issue any of my customers have had,  Tears!)

Any other words of wisdom?

Hello again, Todd210.

I know how vital it is for your client to get their QuickBooks working seamlessly. This ensures they can complete any accounting activities on time.

Let's go over some troubleshooting steps to get your QuickBooks functioning back to normal. Before we proceed, allow me to share some of the reasons why the program is frozen.

  • The company name might be longer than necessary.
  • QBWUSER.INI file is broken or corrupted
  • Hard drive problems have been detected.
  • Corrupted program files and/or QuickBooks Desktop have been installed incorrectly.
  • Windows operating system is damaged

The file may get corrupted or damaged from time to time, preventing it from opening. Suppressing the desktop software allows you to launch it smoothly.

Here's how;

  1. Press and hold the Ctrl key.
  2. Double-click the QuickBooks program icon.
  3. Hold the Ctrl key until you have the no Company Open window.

If you continue to get the same result, perform Solutions 3 up to 5 in this article: QuickBooks Desktop won't open.

We've collated resources that help users how to resolve company file or network issues. The following links will walk you through the step-by-step process:

Hi Rasa-LilaM,

I think you have my issue confused with another issue.   I never said anything about the file not opening.  The file opens fine.  QB operates for several hours before freezing.

And QB works without issue on the satellite computer.

@Todd210

How big is the file size?

File loads fine.  I do believe you mixed up my trouble report with a different problem.

I'll chime in and share information that could help you get through this.

These freezing instances could be because of the file size. QuickBooks' performance is affected by the size of the company file, with larger files leading to decreased performance.

I suggest using the Condense Data utility to reduce your file’s overall size and keep your data and details. It also minimizes the risk of data damage. Here is what QuickBooks typically does during the process:

  • Saves an archive copy of your company files.
  • Removes old closed transactions.
  • Summarizes old, closed transactions. Condensing typically creates summary monthly journal entries for the old, closed transactions and places these summary transactions in the current, working version of the QuickBooks data file.
  • Clears the audit trail. If you clean up a company file and indicate that the company file should be condensed, QuickBooks clears the audit trail before the “removed closed transactions on or before” date.

Moreover, it would be best to back up your QBDT company file before performing these actions. This way, we can make sure that you can restore your data file in case you run into trouble.

You can visit this article for the complete process to condense your file: Use the Condense Data utility.

I'm also adding this article for future reference: Find out what your computer needs to run the best QuickBooks Desktop experience.

Did you reply to my comment? In our experience, file size would be one of the main culprits even if you could still open it.

Hi Guys,

I am remotely logged into the computer right now with Go To Assist.

QB desktop is 2023-R5P 64 bit

File file is 600MB

Keep in mind that the satellite computer is able to operate the file over file sharing and does not have the issue, so the file size and the file contents are not the issue.  And the Satellite computer and the main computer are the same hardware.

The customer swapped the QB users between the two computers, the main computer still freezes up.

Also, when I started QB on the main computer, it took five minutes to load.  When I finally was able to log in, it froze on me.  I waited about five minutes to see if it was just slow.  I also was not able to move QB's window across the screen.  It just ignored me.   It also let me delete its DNS, NG, TLG files without complaining (file locks).

Removing and reinstalling QB did not help.  Disabling the Anti Virus made no difference.  It is virus and junkware free.  All M$ Windows updates have been installed.  `sfc scannow` comes up clean.

Your file size is no longer ideal for running on Pro or Premier and you should condense it. If you're running on Enterprise, try backing up and restoring under a new name.

It works fine on the satellite computer.  File size and file contents are not an issue.  Neither is networking.

Something is eating QB's lunch on the main computer.  Task manager shows everything is normal.  Low CPU, Drive, Network, memory.

Is there a way to see if any programs are piggybacking on QB?

Hi Guys,

I fixed it.

I compared all the running processes on the server against the satellite. I found about seven that should not be running on the server and removed them. Then I ran Intel’s driver update utility and it updated the video driver. Then I ran SUMo and updated every last program.

Customer called me very pleased.

So basically, something or somethings interacted with QuickBooks and cause QB to freeze. It is probably a bug in QB as no other program experienced an issue. But locating the bug is almost impossible to do. So I am just glad QB is now running and not crashing.

Someone please mark this as "the" answer.

Thank you for all the help,
-T
