How do I get QB to stop trying to update payroll for a file that has never had payroll?

Every time QB does an update, it generates an error about a payroll file.  The error indicates "The file you specified cannot be opened and The file exists".  Only issue is we've never used QB payroll, never turned on QB payroll - so why is it trying to update a file we don't use and have never setup?

I can help you fix this in no time, hvmgr.

There are a few reasons why this error message appears even without using our payroll service. Here are the possible reasons why:

  • Outdated QuickBooks Desktop application.
  • Not having admin rights.
  • Installation of the software is not done properly.

To fix this, ensure to update QBDT to the latest release. It gives you a better experience and fixes any software-related issues. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Help menu and choose Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Select Update Now.
  3. Check the Reset Update box to clear all previous update downloads.
  4. Click Get Updates.
  5. Restart the software when the download is complete.
  6. Accept the option to install the new release when prompted.

Once done, run as administrator:

  1. Open the Windows Start menu.
  2. Type “QuickBooks” into the search.
  3. You should see your results listed in the Search window.
  4. Right-click on the QuickBooks version and the year you wish to open.
  5. Select Run as administrator.

If the same thing happens, we can proceed with updating Windows Permission. Feel free to utilize this article for more details: Fix payroll errors: The file you specified cannot be opened and The file exists.

Don't hesitate to ask questions if you need anything else. I'd be glad to help you again.

How do I get QB to stop trying to update payroll for a file that has never had payroll?

I have this issue as well, the solution to update does not work.

This started when I updated to 2023 version. Customer support updated to 2024 already to get rid of this problem and still every time logging into quick books it opens 5 web pages and have to click ok 42+ times to get to a point where error 15241 is put in a couple of the ok's, then finally wants to do payroll updates and can cancel out. The next day after not logging out there are maybe15 ok's to click and 2 web pages to close before able to use the program. We do not do payroll and will not do payroll, there has to be a patch for this very irritating situation.

I have even disabled payroll and have checked off do not allow apps to access. I will see tomorrow if there are more ok's to click.....

Hi LC_,

I appreciate you for updating QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release. Let's perform another troubleshooting step to fix the issue.

To begin with, let's download and install the QuickBooks Tool Hub. This tool helps fix common errors. Then. open the downloaded file and install it. When the installation finishes, open the tool hub.

From there, run the Quick Fix My File or the QuickBooks File Doctor to fix the issue you encountered.

Moreover, if you get a message that the tool hub has been blocked, you can check this article on how you can install the hub differently: Fix QuickBooksToolHub.exe has been blocked.

I'm always around whenever you have concerns with your QuickBooks Desktop.
