How do I import iif files into QuickBooks Online?

We just switched to QuickBooks Online after using QB Desktop Mac for years. I don't see how to import .IIF files. How do you do it in the Online version?

How do I import iif files into QuickBooks Online?

Thanks for choosing QuickBooks, tcmeyers@troymey.

I'm here to share some information about QuickBooks Online's import capabilities. Currently, the supported file formats that you can use to import information to QuickBooks Online are CSV, XLS/XLSX, and Google Sheets.

For IIF files, you may convert them to a supported format before you can import them. There are plenty of file converters that you can search online. Once you're all set up and ready, refer to the articles below to be guided in importing your data:

Alternatively, you can use a third-party importer tool that can directly import IFF into the program. Just go to our QuickBooks App Market or select the Apps menu within your QBO account. Here's how:

  1. Head to the Apps menu.
  2. Select the Find Apps tab.
  3. Enter a keyword in the search bar or click the Browse category button.

Since you're new to the online version, I'd recommend checking our Getting Started Guide to learn the product basics and workflows.

Feel welcome to tag me in your replies and posts if you need more help in accomplishing your other tasks. Have great day ahead!

What types of transactions do you need to import into QBO? Sales Receipts, Journal Entries, or else?

@Fiat Lux - ASIA , the transactions are primarily payments as deposits, they are generated in QuickBooks .IIF format which has been the QuickBooks Desktop import standard since the beginning. Basically it specifies in split-line detail everything about the transaction, distributing between income type, tax liability, shipping expense etc. It is generated by our custom web commerce software built on FileMaker.

I suppose it could be redone into a different file format, but I had completely assumed that QuickBooks Online would be able to deal with it. 😬

How do I import iif files into QuickBooks Online?

Hi tcmeyers@troymey

As QuickBooks Online does not support importing IIF files, we have taken that on to fill the gap. Our app which you can find in the QuickBooks Online Apps store called Axis Online is able to read IIF files, convert and directly import IIF data into QuickBooks Online.  No need for opening in Excel and reformatting it is all automatically done for you.

There is a trial so you can test with your own data first.
