Join nowHello,
Every time I log in to a company file with QB Premier 2015 (the file is on a server, if it makes any difference) QB will star creating a Temporary Backup file, that freezes my QB until it's done, and it can take up to half an hour to finish the Temp Backup.
The folder that contains the company file has dozens of Temp backups, each in its own folder, some are empty, some have a backup file in them.
How do I stop this Temp backup? It's frustrating to be on the phone with a client discussing financial transactions and the QB freezes for several minutes at a time because this Temp Backup is going on. I don't have set scheduled backups in QB.
Any hope of turning this off?
Thank you.

Hi there, @AthCon.
Glad to see you in the Community. I am happy to provide information about the temporary backups that Quickbooks Desktop is creating.
This is happening due to QuickBooks backup not being completed properly. Once the backup has been created and successful the temp backups will stop. If you are using Intuit Data Protect please log out and back in and then try to run a backup manually. If you're backing up manually on the computer, then please run a backup and make sure it has completed. As my colleague mentioned above, it's safe to go ahead and delete the temp files.
If this does not resolve the issue, you can check this preference in Quickbooks.
I have provided a screenshot below to show the location of this feature.
If there are any further question let me know. I am only a post away.
A QBBackupTemp is a temporary folder used as a holding area for QB file components whenever QuickBooks is creating a backup copy, AthCon.
These files are automatically deleted once the backup file is completed. In some cases, the temp (.tmp) folder may remain if there is a failure error message during the backup. With that said, you'll have to manually delete it.
Here's how:
QuickBooks freezing up can also be caused by the number of saved files and because the version of QuickBooks is no longer supported. The 2015 version was discontinued May of last year.
In addition, automatic back up will only happen if you've set up a scheduled one. However, you've mentioned that you haven't set anything that would trigger QB to automatically create a backup when opening the file.
For us to check why it's happening, please contact our Technical Support Team. Here's how:

JenoP, thank you for your prompt response.
I'm not initiating a backup, and I've not set any scheduled backups, therefore QB should not be making those Temp backups on its own. I delete those temp backup folders but they are recreated again. Are you saying this does not happen with other 2015 installations or with more recent versions?
Also, I need to point out your instruction below which is potentially dangerous:
The temp backup folders are in the same folder as the company file. If someone types Ctrl-A in that folder it will select *every file* in the folder. It's better to select each temp backup folder separately and delete each one of them, or select them with Ctrl-Click.
You probably meant to go inside each temp backup folder and then click Ctrl-A.
Thank you.

Hello Kayla,
Thank you for your help.
I tried to do a complete backup but QB couldn't finish and suggested to do a rebuild of the data file. I did that, it completed successfuly, I reopened the file, tried a manual backup again, it didn't finish and suggested to do a rebuild again which I didn't do for the 2nd time.
The temp backup is still being made and I'll try your 2nd suggestion and try again tomorrow.
Thank you.
Hello,@ AthCon.
I'm more than happy to help in any way I can. There's some data damage going on that's causing this issue. If the back up isn't completing, I recommend doing a rebuild and a verify on the file before trying to back up the company file. See the article below for instructions.
After the verify has completed, we need to see if any errors are found. If the message comes up that no issues are detected, then run the backup once more to see if it will complete successfully. At this point, if issues are still present, run the file doctor on the file. Download and install the tool hub to access the file doctor.
This can take several minutes depending on the size of the company file. If at any point you have any questions or need further assistance we have Quickbooks Tech Support that can do this for you as well.
I'm here to help anytime, let me know if there's anything else I can do.
Hello Kayla,
It seems like step 4:
stopped the automatic temp backups.
Thank you!

I spoke too soon. The automatic temp backups are still happening, resulting in QB being frozen or very slow to respond for up to half an hour.
Any other suggestions?
I have reviewed the thread, AthCon.
It seems that all possible troubleshooting has already been provided by my colleagues. I appreciate you for following them diligently.
I recommend contacting our QuickBooks Desktop support to check on your account further. They will be able to check what's causing this to happen even after following the resolution.

@AthCon ,
I noticed you have may data files. Is the problem only occured on one data file or all files?
I do not have that check box in my preferences for QB 2021. See info below. On new company files created in 2021, every time we do a local backup, QB creates a temp back up file in the same location as the original file. The only thing in the file is a abcm.text file. Is there a way to stop this from happening? It is not happening on my other files, just those created in 2021.
I have verified data and rebuilt the file but it is still doing it.
Thanks,
