I have a contractor without social security. How to I prepare his 1099 ?

Thank you for posting here in the Community, @segmtransportation. I'd like to impart some information about filing a 1099 in QuickBooks Online (QBO) without a Social Security Number (SSN).

Currently, it is not possible to prepare a 1099 for your contractor without a SSN in QBO. QuickBooks disallow the use of dummy details in their accounts. It is also important to ensure that all necessary information is provided accurately, including the recipient's SSN or Employer Identification Number (EIN).

Since you don't have an EIN or SSN for the 1099, you must request these numbers from your contractor. The request should state that the identifying number is required to be furnished under the authority of law. I also suggest contacting the IRS so they can give you advice on what other options you can use to file it. You can go through this link to reach out to them: Contact IRS.

Additionally, you can visit this article for more information about what to prepare for this year's payroll: Year-end checklist for QuickBooks Online Payroll.

@Kevin_C  RE: Currently, it is not possible to prepare a 1099 for your contractor without a SSN in QBO. The IRS mandates the submission of 1099 forms with the contractor's SSN information, leading QuickBooks to disallow the use of dummy details in their accounts.

No, the IRS mandates that companies file 1099's on time whether or not they have a valid SSN for the recipient. How can you not know this and make such false claims?  Intuit should be embarrassed.
