Manual Payroll with Desktop Pro 2022

I am looking to upgrade to Desktop Pro 2022.   With this, will I loose the ability to manually do payroll myself?   We are a very small company with 1 employee and I cannot justify paying for the payroll services.    I'm running 2019 now and it has the employee section where I can track my employee information and pay the employee each week manually.

Manual Payroll with Desktop Pro 2022

Hello there, @dodsondj87. I'd like to share details and guide you about doing a manual payroll with QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) 2022.

Based on your description, I can see how the benefit of being able to do a manual payroll would aid you in tracking your employee's information and transactions in QBDT.

Manual payroll isn't included in the list of features that didn't make it to QBDT 2022. You'll still have the ability to manually do your payroll once you upgrade to the said version.

Whenever you're ready to upgrade, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Help menu.
  2. Choose Upgrade QuickBooks.
  3. Select the version you want to upgrade to (QBDT 2022), then click Upgrade Now.
  4. You can keep a copy of your current version of QuickBooks. Select Keep old version on my computer, then click Let’s go.

Then, QuickBooks downloads, installs, and activates the new version for you. It'll update your company file(s) as well. To learn more about the process above, please see this article: Upgrade QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus, Premier Plus, or Enterprise.

Once you're done, set up manual payroll in QBDT. Please note that you'll need to calculate and enter payroll taxes, and file your tax forms yourself. For the step-by-step guide, you can refer to this article: Set up manual payroll without a subscription in QuickBooks Desktop.

Also, QBDT 2022 introduces several features to help automate and streamline your daily tasks. You may want to check out this article as your reference in case you want to know more about them: What's new in QuickBooks Desktop 2022.

You can keep me posted on how it goes in the comments below. If there's anything else you need or concerns about manual payroll in QBDT, I'll gladly help. Take care, and I wish you continued success, @dodsondj87.

One additional question in the Help Menu on my 2019 version.   There is not an upgrade option.   Under Help, there is Buy Quickbooks and under Manage License, there is a "Switch to Pro Plus Subscription".    I'm not certain which one to choose.

Let's select the Buy QuickBooks option, dodsondj87.

Since QuickBooks Desktop 2022 transitioned to a subscription model, you'll have to purchase the product instead of manually upgrading it. This is why the Upgrade QuickBooks option isn't available.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Help menu.
  2. Select Buy QuickBooks

  3. Click the newly opened browser, and you'll be routed outside QuickBooks.
  4. Hover your mouse to Products & Solutions, then select QuickBooks Desktop.
  5. There, you can choose which product you'd like to choose.
  6. Once you've chosen a product, click on Buy now.

You also go directly to our Plans & Pricing page to purchase the product.

Once done, you can now download and install the program on your computer or laptop. Then, upgrade your company file so it'll work on QuickBooks Desktop 2022.

Before using the newest desktop product, I'd recommend browsing these resources to learn more about the several features added to help you automate and streamline your daily accounting tasks:

Please keep us posted on how the process goes. It's our priority to ensure this gest resolved. We're available 24/7.
