Non-Inventory item changes

I currently have non-inventory items that I am trying to change the dates on and everytime I change the date and try to save it I get a massage under the name that tells me to please make a valid entry.  I do this all the time and yesterday started getting this message and it will not let me make changes. I even had a hard time entering a new item. How do I fix this

Non-Inventory item changes

Let’s work together to update your non-inventory items and add new ones, Sharon.

Beforehand, may I know where you update the date for non-inventory items? Any information or screenshots will help us resolve the issue.

In the meantime, let's perform basic troubleshooting steps. Too much historical data is stored in your cache, which speeds up loading times for frequently visited websites. Clearing it will solve the issue.

First, access your account through an incognito window to rule out the possibility of a webpage issue. You can refer to these shortcut keys to open an incognito window in all supported browsers:

  • Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N

Once done, update the date or create a new item again. If it works, switch back to your regular browser. Then, clear its cache. This way, you can access QuickBooks with a clean slate. You can also use a different supported one.

For more details, see this link: Add product and service items.

Additionally, you can visit this page to help adjust the inventory quantity. It guides correcting discrepancies between your recorded inventory levels and the actual quantities. This process is crucial for maintaining accurate inventory records, ensuring that your financial reports reflect the value of your inventory.

Tag my name if you have follow-up questions about changing non-inventory items. I want to ensure everything is running smoothly for you.

I tried all of the solutions you suggested before posting here and it did not fix the problem.  I have tried the solutions you suggested again and it is still not working. I can't add pictures, changes dates, or change dollar amounts.

Thanks for trying those solutions, Sharon119! I just wanted to clarify: Were there any changes to your user permissions when dealing with inventory?  This could be a reason why you are experiencing issues. Please confirm with the primary admin if changes were made. They can manage all user permissions by following the link below:

Let me know if this is the case! I am looking forward to your response and assisting further.

There have been no changes made.  I was in the middle of updating non-inventory items yesterday and started having problems and today I am unable to change or add any non-inventory items. It lets me input everything but when I hit Save and Close it tells me to Please Make A Valid Entry under the Name

Thank you for following up on this, Sharon119. I can imagine the inconvenience you're facing when modifying your non-inventory items. Let's work together to troubleshoot this issue and, if necessary, I'll direct you to the appropriate support.

In QuickBooks Online, invalid characters in the name of one of your list items, such as Customers, Vendors, Products and Services, or the Chart of Accounts, can cause errors similar to the one you encountered. To avoid these errors, ensure that the name you enter for your non-inventory item only contains accepted characters. Here's a list of accepted characters:

  • Alpha-numeric: A-Z, a-z, 0-9
  • Comma: ,
  • Dot or period: .
  • Question mark:?
  • At symbol: @
  • Ampersand: &
  • Exclamation point:!
  • Number/pound sign: #
  • Single quote: '
  • Tilde: ~
  • Asterisk: *
  • Space: ( )
  • Underscore: _
  • Minus sign/hyphen: -
  • Semi-colon: ;
  • Plus sign: +

If you're using a character that isn't on the list of accepted characters, you can replace it with one of the ones listed above.

Otherwise, if the problem persists, I recommend contacting our Support Team so that they can look into it further and open a ticket if needed.

To reach them:

  1. Log in to your QuickBooks Online company.
  2. Click on Help (?).
  3. Select the Search tab, then Contact Us.
  4. Enter a description of your concern, then hit Continue.
  5. Choose whether to Start a chat or Get a callback.

Please don't hesitate to return to this Community thread if you still have questions or other concerns about managing your item lists. Have a wonderful day!

It appears to happen when the is a fraction in the description.  We have always used 5/8" for example but not sure if something was changed yesterday but I can no longer edit when a fraction is in the description which is a HUGE problem.

@Sharon119

Yikes!  That's shocking that you cannot use a slash in the name of a product.  This must be new.  There must be many thousands of customers that use QB Online for 1/4" hose, lines, sockets, etc. that are going to be upset.

Your colleague already told your customer that they're out of luck.  A slash in an unacceptable character for a product in QBO.  What is your Online Support Team going to be able to help them with?

I totally agree. I just started having the problem yesterday but it is a HUGE issue.

Having this problem today, in the beer industry. EVERYONE uses 1/2BBL Keg, and 1/6BBL Keg, etc. for items. Quickbooks has gone to hell. One of their other moronic "updates" as of late, right up with there removing the ability to resize invoice columns as you go, and burying the "print packing slip" option so you have to navigate completely away from an invoice to print one. So dumb. This is exactly the last straw I need to move to a new accounting system. Craziest part is, none of this was broken before. Good job Quickbooks!

Me too. I noticed it when I went to change the sell price on an item. It wouldnt let me change it. This means i'll have to change all my product descriptions as i update the cost or sell price. Why would they change this? They need to add the slash back in as an accepted character asap.

We too just realized there are issues with / " in inventory with pop up to make a valid entry.

Our day to day operations use these features in many occasions and this is a HUGE concern.

Hoping there is an update/change coming ASAP from QB.

I contacted QuickBooks this morning and did a chat. Janine told me it looks like it was an update that she would send to the developers to be fixed but for now to use the | instead of the slash and that they would notify me when it is fixed.  No timeline on when it will be fixed and it creates more work to go back and change it when it it corrected, if it ever is. I have not tried her solution to see if if works

Thanks Sharon119 for the update. I may try the suggestion, but like you mentioned--to go and make all the changes to then have to rechange may be more of a hassle. For new entries I'll have to use it, but here's hoping QB can figure it out!! Thanks again for your update, appreciate it!

The problem with using the / appears to be fixed, for now anyway.  I just updated some items that have fractions in the description and it let me save them. Hope the fix stays. Thanks for all the comments
