QB Desktop 2020 Windows

This is about auto-updating QB Desktop 2020 on Windows 10 Pro.

Presently, there is a shortcut in Startup Folder "QuickBooks Update Agent". In Startup Items (Task Manager) there is the item "QuickBooks Automatic Update". It is enabled.

If  QuickBooks Auto Update is enabled in Startup (Task Manager), is the QuickBooks Update Agent shortcut needed in Windows Startup Folder?  Seems redundant and unnecessary to have both.

Hi @dave553,

I'll take care of this query for you.

All shortcuts found in your Windows Startup folder are from those apps installed on your computer. While it's safe to delete shortcuts, please ensure that the item you're deleting is only the shortcut of the app, and not the actual app itself.

Other options you can take when you need to update QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) are in this article: Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release. It includes manual updates within the product or accessing our website.

For each QBDT 2020 version release, along with their features and improvements are listed in this article: Release notes for QuickBooks Desktop 2020. You can view this page any time there's an update for the product. It ensures that you'll stay on top of each release, and familiarize yourself with any new features.

Let me know if you need further assistance. Post a comment below, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

Thank you for the prompt reply, but the response does not address my question. I know how to update QB Desktop from within the program.

My question is about auto-updating QB Pro Desktop for Windows.

If you look in Windows Startup folder, you will see the QuickBooks Update Agent shortcut, unless you removed it. Click CTRL-ALT-DEL and select Task Manager. Click the STARTUP tab and you will see QuickBooks Automatic Update enabled (unless you manually disabled it).

Are both the shortcut in Startup Folder AND Startup Item "QuickBooks Automatic Update" necessary for QB to auto-update?

Thank you for the clarification, dave553.

QuickBooks installs updates to repair glitches, add new features and patch security flaws. The QuickBooks Update Agent runs in the background on your system when you boot your computer. This application searches for updates and installs them when found.

If the update program causes problems on your system, you can remove it from the Startup folder. Here's how:

  1. Open the Startup folder. Press Windows-R, type shell:startup and click OK.
  2. Right-click the Quickbooks Update Agent entry.
  3. Select Delete.
  4. Click Delete Shortcut.
  5. Restart your computer to stop the Quickbooks Update Agent from running.

Let me know if you got additional questions.
