Hi there, @jmps1. Yes, there's an option to track these items in QuickBooks Desktop.

You can utilize the Multiple U/M per item feature to track these products in the program. Using this, you can assign a unit of measure to things you buy by case and sell them by piece. Here are the steps to track your items:

First, turn on the Unit of Measure feature.

  1. Go to the Edit menu and select Preferences.
  2. Click Items & Inventory, then go to the Company Preferences tab.
  3. In the Unit of Measure section, select Enable. If you don't see this button, this means that it's already turned on.
  4. Choose Multiple U/M per item.
  5. Click OK.

Once done, add a unit of measure set.

  1. Go to the Lists menu and click U/M Set List.
  2. From the U/M Set drop-down list, select New.
  3. Complete the Unit of Measure wizard to track case and unit items.

Please note that when you set up multiple units of measure, always assign the smallest unit of measure by what you sell and not purchase. If you buy a single unit and sell by a case, then use whole numbers. QuickBooks will multiply the cost. If you buy a case and sell it by a single unit, use decimals as QuickBooks will divide the cost.

If you need further help setting this up, I'd suggest getting in touch with your accountant. They can guide you through the process to ensure your records are accurate.

Good day, @jmps1.

Let me join the thread and provide you with additional guidance on how to apply the U/M to the inventory item that can be configured in the Item List in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

The Item List is where you can manage inventory items, including the U/M Unit Measure, categories, and pricing. You are one step further from applying the U/M to the inventory item, which is to set up the Item List.

Here's how:

  1. Navigate to the List menu and choose the Item List.
  2. Select New from the dropdown menu by clicking on the Item arrow.
  3. Select the appropriate classification for the item in the Type section.
  4. You can enter the name you want to use under the Item Name/Number box.
  5. In the Unit of Measure, ensure that the appropriate U/M set is selected.
  6. In the Cost field, please enter the purchase amount for the item.
  7. Enter the amount you want the customer to pay in the Sales Price.
  8. Once done, click OK to save the item.
