QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise Multi-User

I have a client that purchase an upgrade to Desktop Enterprise 2023. The client purchased a Multi-user version but for some reason I keep getting asked to log out so payroll can be processed. Is that typical?

Now I'm trying to get into the clients QBD and a pop-up comes up stating that "QuickBooks is unable to open this company file.  It may have been opened by another user." Why is this coming up if it's a Multi-user version?

Thank you

QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise Multi-User

Which QB Desktop year version did they use before QB Desktop 2023?

When did they purchase a new license of QB Desktop 2023?

QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise Multi-User

Thanks for posting your concern here in the Community, @bjp2poodles. I'm here to assist you with ensuring you'll be able to run payroll seamlessly in multi-user mode in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

Currently, the option to use Payroll, which works concurrently for multiple users, is unavailable because functions like Payroll and Bank Feeds have a lockout system in multi-user mode, which stops other users from using the same function simultaneously.

Regarding the error message you've encountered, here are the following reasons why it occurs:

  • The file is open on another computer in Single User mode.
  • The file is located in a read-only network folder.
  • The files are hosted on a Linux server and use more than one set of login credentials to sign on to the shared folder.
  • The file is being accessed using remote software (LogMeIn, GoToMyPc, etc.), and the host computer still sees that that user is still logged on.

To sort this out, we can utilize the QuickBooks File Doctor from the QuickBooks tools to repair your program. It's designed to fix the problems with functionalities that aren't working well. Here’s how:

  1. Close your QuickBooks account.
  2. Download the most recent version of the QuickBooks Tool Hub, then save the file somewhere you can easily locate it.
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install.
  5. When the installation finishes, open the Tool Hub on your Windows desktop.
  6. Select Program Problems and click Run QuickBooks File Doctor.
  7. Select your company file from the drop-down menu. If you don’t see your file, select Browse and search to find it.
  8. Click Check your file (middle option only) and then Continue.
  9. Enter your QuickBooks admin password, and then hit Next.

However, if the issue persists after performing the steps above, you can follow Solution 2 of this article to manually resolve the error: Error: -6073, -99001 QuickBooks is unable to open this company file.

Please keep me updated on how it works for you after following these steps. It's our priority to ensure everything is taken care of. If you have further questions about multi-user mode, let us know in the comments.
