Quickbooks for PC and Mac

One of my clients is considering using Quickbooks for Mac. I use Quickbooks Accountant on a PC. Will I be able to share her files with my program to make changes and then return them to her to restore to her Mac?

Quickbooks for PC and Mac

Hi there, @jamzdean.

Yes, you can share the client files with your program by following the steps below. We called this round-tripping, it’s a process where you need to convert your QuickBooks Desktop for Windows file to a QuickBooks Desktop for Mac file or vice versa.

To round-trip your file, we recommend that you and your accountant be on the same version of QuickBooks.

To prepare your QuickBooks file for your accountant:

  1. Open the company file you want to share.
  2. Choose the File and Save File for Accountant. QuickBooks will ask you to verify the data in your company file.
  3. Click Verify (recommended) or Skip Verify. Important: If the verification isn’t successful, QuickBooks recommends that you rebuild your company file before sending it to your accountant.
  4.  Once QuickBooks tells you that the verification is successful, name the converted file and navigate to where you want to save it.
  5. Click Save. If you have a Dropbox account and you want to save the file to your dropbox, click Select Dropbox Folder.
  6. Click OK. QuickBooks will create a QuickBooks backup file (.qbb file extension). You can click Show File in Finder to locate the file on your Mac.

When your accountant returns your company file, you’ll need to convert it to a QuickBooks for Mac same on file.

To open the QuickBooks file from your accountant:

  1. In QuickBooks for Mac, choose File and Open Company.
  2. Navigate to the .qbb file your accountant sent, and click Open.
  3. Click OK when asked if you want to restore a QuickBooks file.
  4. Enter a name for the restored file, and click Save.

I'm adding this article you can check for detailed steps on how to exchange files with your client in user guides: Get QuickBooks Desktop user guides.

@jamzdean

Afaik, the round tripping procedure is only applicable on the same year version. e.g your customer can use QB Mac 2020 and you have to own QB 2020 Pro/Premier/Premier Accountant. Otherwise, you will need another solution to serve your client.
