We are a wholesale distribution company with inventory and have been using QuickBooks Enterprise Desktop forever. Recently, we started to migrate over to QuickBooks Online and learned that there is not a sales order function. Has this been addressed and can we now add sales orders like we normally would in the desktop version
You should stay with QB Desktop. If you prefer switching to QBO, consider having an inventory management app with the sales order feature to sync with QBO.

When I try to use the Sales Order option, I get this message..."You’re using the older layout for QuickBooks invoices that is not compatible with the current version of sales orders. Please try again after switching to the newer version of invoices" How do I switch to a newer version?

Yes, QBO now has sales orders. Click SALES on the left side menu and you will see SALES ORDERS.
I don't know why I too so long but I repeatedly asked for sales orders and now er have it!

As per my original post, will this new sales order capability allow for an estimate to be turned into a sales order which could be turned into an invoice and then receive payment? I need to function just like it does with QuickBooks desktop version
