Non Inventory Items

Hello there. I have some questions on non inventory items. I work for a drilling company and we are looking for a better way to keep track of our inventory. We currently do not use that function in our QB enterprise. I am not new to QB, I used it at my previous company but there we have only used it for inventory items where we receive items off a PO and then invoice the item out to customers. At this company we invoice out services not the actual inventory. Can I still use the functions set up in Enterprise to keep track of the inventory and call it non inventory items? And what would be the right way to receive the items and how would I adjust them out?

Hope this makes sense. Thanks.

Non Inventory Items

It’s great to see you in the Community, CeCe13.

The Inventory feature in QuickBooks Desktop can help track your inventory items, services, and non-inventory products. We also have a guide to help decide on how you’d like to record an item. Check out the list below.inventory qbdt.png

In QuickBooks Desktop, you can either receive inventory with or without a bill. The process differs in how you entered the transaction.

To input your inventory with a bill:

  1. On the Homepage, tap the Receive Inventory drop-down to select Receive Inventory with Bill.inventory qbdt.1.png
  2. This will open the Bill window.
  3. From there, click the Vendor drop-down and choose the supplier’s name.
  4. Hit the Yes button to receive a purchase order for the bill.inventory qbdt.2.png
  5. Choose the correct purchase order and tap the OK button.
  6. Review the information on the Bill.
  7. Click Save & Close.

If you’re unable to create a bill, follow the instructions in this article. Make sure to go to the Receive inventory without a bill section and choose QuickBooks Desktop for Windows: Receive inventory.
