When I tried to restore my QuickBooks from a back up on a thumb drive it tells me my company is read only and needs to be saved under a new name.  I have not changed any settings and have backed up in the past with no issues. I run QuickBooks pro 2016 on a desktop and my laptop, neither are on a network.  How can I fix this.

Hi there, @Lizber.

The possible reasons you're unable to restore the backup copy are the filename has special characters, or the backup has been made in a newer version but is being restored to an older version

You'll have to change the name of your company file and its location so you'll be able to restore it successfully. I'll guide you how.

Change the file name:

  1. Go to the location where your company file is currently saved.
  2. Right-click the file and click Rename.
  3. Change the file name and press Enter.
  4. Click Yes to confirm the action.

Change the file location:

  1. Go to the location where your file is currently saved.
  2. Right-click your company file, then select Copy
  3. Go to another location, you can either choose on the desktop or a new folder to paste the company file.

Once done, you can now restore the backup of your company file.
