I would like to be able to sort a register so that it appears with the most recent transaction at the top, rather than the bottom.

This is not what I want to do.
I want to sort a specific register, in this case the one for my bank account, so that the most recent transaction is at the top, rather than the bottom, when the register is displayed on the screen.
In other words, I want to sort it by date, from most recent to earliest, rather than the other way around.
I appreciate you for adding more details about your concern, byomtov.
To show the most recent transactions at the top of the page in your register is unavailable at this time. For now, you can run a QuickReport and filter the data to the most recent one.
Here's how:
The following article contains instructions on how to filter the data on the report as well as changing the fonts/colors, header, footer, etc: Customize reports in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

The report mentioned by my colleague above is the option you were looking for, so you'll be able to sort the date to the most recent transaction.
Here's how:
If you want the same customization, you can memorize this report in QuickBooks. Memorizing a report allows you to save with its current customization settings. Depending on the date filter, the data will be different or updated.
I’ve also added a reference that tackles different functionality in customizing reports in QuickBooks. It shows you how to filter report data, change fonts, colors, and even setting alignment.
