Join nowWe are a small coffee shop that uses Square and we have sync square with QuickBooks Online. My items/products are flowing through great. The issues we are having is that our drinks in square have modifiers (ex. Alternative Milk or Extra Flavor Shot) and those modifiers are not coming over with the Square Sync. I have added the modifiers in my products/service list (just like the are labelled in Square) but they are still not flowing through. Anyone have any advice on how to get the modifier to come over so that my Square sales deposits will match with my Square bank feed deposits without me having to go add the modifiers to the sale receipt and updating the deposit?
Hi, @JMoon1981.
I know the feeling of confusion you are encountering right now regarding the issue of your modifiers not coming over through the Square sync. I assure you that I am here assisting you today.
Sync issues are related to integration preferences. To confirm this, you can check its setting if it's indicated as "Connect to Square".
The Connect to Square app automatically enters "Square item" for the names of your products and services in imported transactions. A product's or service's name only needs to be manually changed once for the app to remember and use it for similar transactions in the future.
However, you can avoid this work by importing your products and services from Square.
Here's how:
1. Open Square and export your products and services using a CSV file.
2. Open QuickBooks and follow the steps to import products and services into QuickBooks Online from your CSB file.
By doing these things, you can make sure that the names of your products and services on Square and QuickBooks are the same.
If you ever integrated your Square outside QuickBooks, I recommend contacting Square's support to verify if modifiers are included for the syncing or not.
In the future, if you want to download, review, categorize, and match your bank transactions you can read this article: Categorize and match online bank transactions in QuickBooks Online.
Let me know if you have any questions about the Square app integrations. I'll be glad to help you with that.
Hi Bryan_M,
Thanks for responding. I have put my modifiers into my products/service list, but they are still now coming in from Square. I have all my other products coming over (instead of Square Items) and they work beautifully. The frustrating part is the modifiers (ex. Milk Alternative, which is labeled the same in QBO and Square). I had to add 10.00 to my Saturday's sales receipt from Square so that it will match to my Square deposit. I can't figure out what I'm not understanding to get them to come over with the other items that I sell. Square is of no help as they say it's a QBO issue. I just need to know from someone is do Modifiers from Square actually ever come over to QBO or do I have to setup my Square differently, so I don't have to add my modifiers in every day for every deposit?

Thanks for the response. I have all my items in the products lists (as I imported them as a CSV file last weekend) All my items in Square are coming over correctly. It's my modifier on coffees (ex Milk Alternative, Extra Flavor) that won't come over. I really want to know from anyone is QBO able to sync the modifier or do I need to setup my Square differently? Square support is of no help as they send me to QBO. QBO Support tells me to talk to Square. I just need to understand how modifier are viewed with the Square APP sync.
Hello there, @JMoon1981.
Thanks for performing the initial troubleshooting to fix the issue and letting us know the result. Let me provide some information on why some of your Square transactions didn’t show up in QuickBooks.
I suggest reaching out to Square Support so they can look into the transactions that need to be synced and refresh the connection to QuickBooks.
You can also check this article to learn more about connecting the square app to QuickBooks Online: Sync Square with QBO.
Once you're done downloading transactions, you can start matching and categorizing them in QuickBooks.
Don't hesitate to comment below if you need anything else. I'm always here to help you. Have a pleasant day.
Explore this connector as a workaround. I remember some of our clients using the modifier feature in Square. You should contact their Support to make sure.

As another option, consider using the trial version of a backup restore app as your safety net.

Hi,
Square Support sent me back to QBO support. It's a circle that is getting very fustrating as soon as I say it's hooked to QBO (which I tried not to say this time) Here is their response.
