As I understand, you're asking why check numbers aren't automatically populating when writing a check. If this is what's happening, it's probably because the Print Later box is being marked. This causes the option to turn off the check number. You'll want to uncheck it instead to enable check numbers. I've added this screenshot for a visual guide:


Also, when you talk about the print button, are you referring to the Print icon beside the Print Later option? If so, you can click it and choose Check to print it.

This will give you now an option to print the check:
