Is it possible yet to switch from QB online to QB desktop?
I've searched through the Q & A and it seems like up until 2021 QB claimed to be able to, but in reality couldn't transfer all the data. Is this still the case or has anything changed? Has anyone had any success making the switch? Keep in mind we need all the pdf receipts attached to expenses to transfer appropriately as well.
Your attachments will not migrate to QB Desktop. If you need to migrate to another cloud-based accounting application, you can purchase a third-party conversion service to include attachment migration.
Thanks for checking in with us, AOMalley2.
There are certain limitations to how your data convert from QuickBooks Online to QuickBooks Desktop. Though attachments will not migrate to the Desktop version, however, we can capture and upload receipts to QuickBooks Desktop. To learn more about these limitations, check out this article: Limitations when you convert from QuickBooks Online to QuickBooks Desktop.
Here’s how to upload PDFs or images of your receipt in QuickBooks Desktop. Keep in mind that if you’re using PDFs, you can only have one receipt per page Let me show you how:

So it sounds like I would have to download and then upload the individual receipt images for each of the thousands receipts we have and then reattach them to their respective receipts all over again? Am I understanding this correctly? Do you realize how insane that sounds?
Hi there, @AOMalley2.
Thanks for taking the time to follow up with us.
I understand how frustrating it can be to download and reattach the attachments. However, at this time, this is the only way to add them back to QuickBooks. That said, I wanted to let you know that I have gone ahead and submitted a feedback request to our Product Development Team. This way, the suggestion can be taken into consideration for a future update. Having the easiest workflow for our customers is the top priority.
Please know that our Development Team works each day to make the program the best it can be for our users, and love to hear from customers like you. If you'd like, you can send in suggestions any time by using the steps I've included below.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I'll be here to lend a hand anytime. Take care, AOMalley2.
Has any progress been made on this? We need to switch to QuickBooks Desktop from QBO, and have thousands of receipts attached to expenses as well.
Hi there, @nharfert1.
At this time, moving your data from QuickBooks Online (QBO) to QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) doesn't include attachments, as it is part of the data limitation.
I know that you have thousands of receipts attached to your expenses. As an alternative, you'll have to upload receipts manually to QBDT and attach the receipts to your expenses. You can also consider looking for a third-party app that can help upload receipts in bulk to QBDT. You can go to this website to look for an app: https://desktop.apps.com/home.
Once you're ready to switch to QBDT from QBO, you can check out this article for the detailed steps and information: Move your QuickBooks Online data to QuickBooks Desktop.
Come back to this post if you have other concerns or follow-up questions about this. I'll be around to provide further assistance.
