Buy nowHi! My accountant sent the changes that needed to be imported in Quickbooks by email. I followed the steps he sent on how to import and received a message that says:
“This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.”
I contacted him and he is going to send me the changes so I can manually enter them. I tried to turn off the Accountant’s Copy since don’t need it anymore but when I go to File, Send Company File, Accountant’s Copy the only highlighted options are Save File and Send to Accountant. The other options are grayed out (Import Accountant’s Changes from Web, Important Accountant’s Changes from File and Remove Restrictions). I did the Rebuild Data which fixed Error 179 and then did Verify Data and all was good. I am still unable to remove the restrictions. I am using Quickbooks Pro 2021 through Right Networks. Would upgrading to Quickbooks Pro 2023 help or hurt?
Thanks
I'll ensure your accountant's restrictions turn off so he can send you another copy you need, @nancygif.
I appreciate your hard work and time spent on the verify and rebuild tools. This is an excellent first step toward resolving any company file concerns. I have more troubleshooting approaches to turn off the accountant copy restrictions.
The grayed-out Remove Restriction tab doesn't matter in the QuickBooks Desktop version. But you can still update it with the latest features and product improvements.
This tab will not be grayed out if your QuickBooks Desktop is under Accountant's Changes Pending status. See the sample screenshot below for reference:
Since it's grayed out in your case, it may have been automatically removed, as there is no pending data. You can make another copy for an accountant if you want and then remove the restriction right away. Before that, make sure to create a backup of your company file for future use. Then follow the steps below:
For more information, see this article: Remove the accountant's copy restriction.
I'm sharing some helpful articles about importing accountant changes, should you need them.

We just purchased 2024 Desktop Pro Plus. For some reason the Accountants changes were removed in 2015 and they are not present in 2024. I was successful in converting the data to 2024. I was hoping the restrictions would not be an issue. When I attempted to follow your directions; we do not have the option of client activities? it just not there. Please see the attached as this is what we have in both versions.
Any further suggestions?
Susan
Hello there, s1demars.
Please know that when migrating data from one QuickBooks Desktop to another, all the data including the accountant's changes will be imported. Since these were removed in 2015, you can consult your accountant to obtain this information, as the accountant's restrictions aren't the source of this case.
Furthermore, the Remove Restrictions option will only be available if you have accountant changes pending status in the program. Otherwise, this tab will be grayed out on your end. However, if you have already imported the accountant's copy and the changes don't remove, you'll need to send a new one to your accountant so the Remove Restrictions feature will work smoothly.
On the other hand, the Client Activities option is only available in QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise. This is the reason it's missing on your end. Since you're using QuickBooks Pro, I recommend using the Send to Accountant option instead to create a copy and send it to your accountant.
Lastly, you can read this artilcle if you need to see what features are included in the QuickBooks Desktop 2024 release and how you can use them to benefit your business: What’s new in QuickBooks Desktop 2024.
