upgrading from quickbooks for mac 2016

I am looking to upgrade my old mac to a 2024 imac.  I am concerned that the Quickbooks 2016 program that I have been using as a license will not be uploaded to the new subscription product as this product has been discontinued.  Will the new product  incorporate my existing files and carry forward my old data? and the same holds true with the old Quicken product I have which is Quicken 2015-

I really don't want to re-enter all this financial data

Thanks

upgrading from quickbooks for mac 2016

Hi there, Billy.

Allow me to give insights and guide you in moving your data from your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) Mac 2016 to QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) Mac 2016.

Create a MAC.qbb file by opening QuickBooks from your PC first. A MAC.qbb file is a copy of the QuickBooks Desktop company file that can be restored to your Mac, using Quickbooks for Mac. You'll be guided through completing the task by the following steps.

  1. Update your QuickBooks to the latest version if you're still able to open it on a computer.
  2. Look for QuickBooks on your computer. Then, Run as administrator.
  3. Choose Utilities from the File menu.
  4. Select Copy Company File for QuickBooks Mac, then follow the onscreen instructions. QuickBooks will automatically create a MAC.qbb (backup).
  5. A message that says "It looks like ‘QuickBooks for Windows’ might be a better fit for your company," Ensure that the data isn’t converted from Windows. Then, select Yes if you want to continue.
  6. To save the file, go to the folder you want to save it to. Name the file, and click Save. Do not use special characters in file names.
  7. Use any other storage device such as a USB flash drive, etc. to transfer this file to your Mac.

Next, restore the backup copy on your Mac. Here's how:

  1. Make sure to meet the system requirements for QuickBooks Mac.
  2. If you haven't downloaded it yet, visit our website page to install it: Downloads & Updates.
  3. Ensure your QuickBooks Desktop for Mac is updated to the latest release.
  4. Close and reopen QuickBooks. Then, copy the backup to the Documents folder on your Mac.
  5. Go to the File menu. Then, select Open Company.
  6. Choose the MAC.qbb file, then click Open.
  7. Select OK if you want to restore your QuickBooks for Windows file.
  8. Type in the name of the restored file. Then, Save.

If you can't open your 2016 QuickBooks backup copy on your new computer, download our 30-day trial to restore it: Download a trial of QuickBooks Desktop. Proceed by following the steps I mentioned above on moving your data to QuickBooks Mac.

You can check out our QuickBooks help articles page for more detailed guidelines on managing your business in your software.
