Upgrading my 2001 Quickbooks Pro

I am currently using a QuickBooks Pro - 4.0 that I installed way back in 2001 using Windows 95.

This setup has been flawless because this laptop has never been connected to the internet.

Recently I have been starting to have missing invoices and gaps missing invoices.

I am looking for direction, I would like to shift all of my current data to an up to date IOS Mac computer or I can use another windows laptop and continue with this 4.0 program?

I only use Quickbooks Pro to generate invoices and estimates, its not used for anything else.

Hi.  I do something similar.  While I run the latest version of Enterprise at work, I do have a copy of Pro13 at home that I use for invoicing the odd consulting job now and again.  It works just fine and I expect it will continue to do so as long as I don't ever want to connect to bank feeds or use any other online connection.  This is because Intuit only supports programs from the last three or so years.  But to answer your question, do you still have the install files?  I would give it a shot.  Install the program and then transfer the data file and see if it works.  I do believe Mac versions are different from PC versions, so you may want to aim towards that PC laptop rather than the Mac.

If the only two things you do with the current setup is Invoices and Estimates and obviously do not record any payments against those invoices then I would suggest you look in an entirely different arena.

  1. There is not a single edition of Quickbooks, even desktop versions, that does not require an internet connection for activation and updates.
  2. Your data file would not be directly updatable to any brand new version of QB. It would require multiple conversions in 3-5 year increments at best and you would be further ahead outsourcing the conversion
  3. ALternately a csv or excel download of your data, such as it is, could be uploaded to new QB or to any other software
  4. Without using any of the general ledger or banking capabilities, not even the recording of your expenses, QB is overkill for you.

Your file is too old. If you wish to migrate data to QBD 2021, you have to contact Support and ask Data Service to upgrade your file. Otherwise you have to purchase a 3rd party upgrade service.

First off, good luck finding a new computer that actually has a 3.5" disc drive.

Secondly it is highly doubtful that you could install from the discs to a new Windows laptop. I have tried in the past with other programs and always get a fail if there is a newer version out there.

Third, even if you could install there is no guarantee that you would not still lose data that you say you are.

Fourth, QB for PC and QB for IOS are different and non-compatible except through conversion of data

On the plus side, however, since you claim to have never ever connected the existing computer to the internet then you would never have installed any updates to the old program and there would be no prohibition on opening.

In my past life I successfully installed microsoft office from a pack of 23 discs designed for Windows 3.11 just so it would exist as a prior install on a computer running XP or W7 so I could install Office 98 without having to buy a new license

Does Quickbooks charge for this data transfer service or is it included in a new 2021 subscription?

I have another older laptop that I believe runs Windows XP, I'll pull it out tonight and look it over.

Im aware that a 2001 program will not work with a new 2021 computer, but I do believe that I have a functioning Windows XP laptop. Plan on pulling it out this evening and looking it over.

Yes my business laptop has NEVER been connected to the internet, otherwise it would be on its 5th generation with thousands of dollars and many hours waisted, bought the laptop I believe in 1999.

Yikes 23 discs!

@Lostinthought

You may purchase a one time license of QBD 2021.
