Upgrading your company file is easy, hlscal.

We can start by creating a backup file to make sure that the data will be saved before upgrading. Once done, you can proceed in upgrading your QuickBooks Desktop 2017 to 2020 version. For your reference, feel free to check this out: Upgrade to a New QuickBooks Desktop Version.

Then, you can move your upgraded company file into the newly installed QuickBooks Desktop 2020 on a Windows 10 platform. It's also important to know the system requirements for the 2020 version. This ensures that the software is compatible with your new computer to get the best experience in using QuickBooks.

I am starting with QB 2014 not 2017

Thanks for coming back here and clarifying the QuickBooks version you want to upgrade, hlscal.

To avoid data loss or damage to your company file, you'll need to do an incremental upgrade. This means that you will have to download the QuickBooks Desktop versions from 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019. to 2020. 

You can follow these steps on how to download the program:

1. Sign in to Windows as an admin user.
2. If you haven't already, download your new version of QuickBooks Desktop.
3. Follow the steps to install your new version.

Then, follow the instructions provided by my colleague Catherine_B. You can also reach out to our Customer Care Team to ensure that you can go through the process without any issues.

Here's how:

1. In your QuickBooks Desktop program, go to Help > QuickBooks Desktop Help.
2. In the Have a Question window, click the Contact Us link at the bottom.
3. From the Contact Us page, select any topics.
4. Under Here's how to connect with a QuickBooks expert section, click the Start a Message or Get a Callback button.

Open your company file on QBD 2014 and create a backup file (i.e QBB). Copy that file into the folder on your new machine and restore it on QBD 2020.
