Why am I getting an error message that says "That doesn't look like the right social security number. Take a look and try again"?

I have checked to make sure the employee is not a rehire, and used a different web browser.

Why am I getting an error message that says "That doesn't look like the right social security number. Take a look and try again"?

This isn't the experience we want you to encounter, Sharnae.

Let me make it up to you by ensuring this gets sorted out.

Firstly, you can verify your employee's SSN by accessing the Social Security Number Verification Service.

Once confirmed that the SSN is correct based on the website, we can perform some troubleshooting steps to further fix this.

You can try logging in to your QBO account using a private browser as it ignores websites from using cookies and doesn’t record any history and data.

You can use these shortcut keys on your keyboard to access incognito mode:

  • Safari: Control + Option + P
  • Google Chrome: Press Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Firefox or Internet Explorer: Ctrl + Shift + P

If this works, it means that you need to clear the browser's cache so the system can start fresh. If you get the same result, I recommend switching to a different supported browser.

Lastly, I've added an article you can browse for you to be able to learn how to access your state agency websites: Access state agency websites for payroll.

If you still have further queries about managing your employee's SSN, please don't hesitate to let me know. I'm just around to offer a lending hand. Take care.

Are you sure you're entering the SSN exactly as it appears on their Social Security card?
