With the new invoicing format, I'm confused about how to unlink something from an invoice without deleting it altogether. I'll want to re-add it later. Thoughts?

You can delete the transaction added to your invoice, Lisa. Let's say a payment is linked to an invoice as our example. I'll guide you on how.

In QuickBooks Online, you can delete any transactions attached to a sales entry without removing the invoice itself.

Based on our example, a payment is recorded to mark the invoices as paid. To delete the transaction, refer to these steps:

  1. Navigate to Sales and locate the transaction from the Invoices tab.
  2. Click View/Edit under the Action tab to open the invoices page.
  3. Hover down to the Invoice total below and click on the Payment link.
  4. Then, the Receive Payment page will open.
  5. Once done, click More below and choose Delete to unlink the transaction from the invoice.

If you want to add the payment again in the future, you can check out this reference: Record invoice payments.

Additionally, you'll want to seek additional guidance from our QuickBooks Live Expert Assisted team to help you manage customer invoices and provide assistance in keeping track of your overall transactions.

Moreover, I'm including this guide in case you want to track your overall business finances: Run reports in QuickBooks Online.

Effective invoice management is essential for keeping accurate records of your business, Lisa. Reach out to us in the comments below if there's anything else you need assistance with. Our team will be around to guide you further.

There is no need to delete any transactions in order to break the links.

To break the links, edit the invoice and change the customer name to a different name (perhaps a fake customer set up just for this purpose) and save the invoice. Then edit it again and change the name back to the original customer and then save it again.
