Adding attachments that were lost

I recently updated to Quickbooks Desktop 2024. However, the attachments didn't transfer. The attach file is in the company file location, but the PDFs are simply not there. I have them all saved in another spot on my computer. Is there some way to copy them into the attach file?

Help has arrived, @KJOHNSTON0312

I'll help you ensure you can add those missing attachments back to QuickBooks Desktop.

An Attach folder is made and stored in the same location as the QuickBooks company file when utilizing QuickBooks Attached Documents. The connection between the company's file and the attached documents will be damaged by renaming the file or moving it to a new location.

To fix the problem, re-link the Attached Documents. Here's how.

  1. Browse to the location where your company file is stored and open the Attach folder.
  2. If there is NO folder with the new company file name, change the name of the folder to match the new name of the company file.
  3. If there is a folder with the new company file name, open the folder with the OLD company file name.
  4. Copy and paste the contents of the Inbox folder into the Inbox sub-folder of the folder with the new company file name.
  5. Copy and paste the contents of the Txn folder into the Txn sub-folder of the folder with the new company name.
  6. From the QuickBooks Company menu, select Documents then Repair Attached Documents Links.
  7. Click Repair Links.

I also had the same problem.   I started to follow your instructions, but I did not have the "attach" folder yet or any of its sub folders in my new company file location.   I just did the transition to 2024 yesterday and was just starting to work in it again today.  So, I thought if I added an attachment, it would help get that folder created.  It worked for the "attach" folder and the subfolder "Txn" however I still do not have the "Inbox" folder yet so I cannot copy and paste the documents as per your instructions.  How can I get the folder to be created so that I can finish following the steps?   I'm assuming I should not just create it myself.

Also, I do not have the "list" folder, which you did not mention but I see it is another folder under my old "attach" folders so I figured I would ask about it as well.

Thank you!

Hi there, figuringitout1. Let me provide additional information about adding the attachments to your new company file.

Your Inbox folder is located on your old company file. First, find your company file using this file name: C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files.

Once you've located your company file, copy the attached folder from your old file and paste it into the location of your new company file.

Adding attachments that were lost

I have followed the instructions that you have indicated here, I have effectively taken all of my documents in Attach_OLD and moved them to a new Attach folder. However, I go to push repair links, and it appears that my quickbooks does nothing, and just freezes. What is supposed to happen when I click repair links? Do I need to be in single user mode for this to work?

You can be in a single or multi-user mode, chxcomex. Let me guide you through the process.

When you click the Repair links in QuickBooks Desktop, it typically initiates a process to fix any issues or corrupt files within the application.

On the other hand, let's utilize the QuickBooks Tool Hub to fix common problems and prevent the screen from freezing.

Please follow these step-by-step guide:

  1. Close your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), then download the recent version (1.6.0.3) of the QuickBooks Tool Hub.
  2. Please save it in an easily accessible location and open it (QuickBooksToolHub.exe). Follow the on-screen instructions to install it, agreeing to the terms and conditions.
  3. Once complete, you can access the tool hub by double-clicking the icon on your Windows desktop.

Now, let's run Quick Fix my program:

  1. In the QuickBooks Tool Hub, click Program Problems.
  2. Select Quick Fix My Program.
  3. Start QBDT and open your data file.

Proceed to Solution 2 in this article: Repair your QBDT.
